The celebrating tributes begin this Sunday, Feb. 17, when the United States Women's National Team plays Canada in the third and final game of the 2019 Rivalry Series. Sunday will also mark NBC's Hockey Day in America, and the network will air content showcasing hockey at various levels from across the country.
Each day of the week has a theme to it, with Monday saluting all players, Tuesday celebrating coaches, Wednesday recognizing officials and Thursday honoring local rinks. The weekend kicks off on Friday with "Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey Day," while Saturday is "Try Hockey Day" and Sunday is "Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day."
Two young officials will also have the opportunity to meet NHL officials working at 18 different games over the course of the week, getting the chance to speak with the referees prior to the contest and then stay and watch the pros in action.
The Colorado Avalanche will be providing support at all 10 local rinks on Try Hockey Day. In addition, Avalanche mascot Bernie will join in the fun at the free sessions in Monument (9-11 a.m.), Littleton (1:30-2:30 p.m.) and Centennial (4-5 p.m.).
No experience is required to participate, but pre-registrations for the Try Hockey events is encouraged as space is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis. More information, including registration to RSVP and a list of all participating rinks, can be found at
