For the first time all season, Columbus has lost three games in a row, as the Blue Jackets (28-18-3) dropped a 5-4 decision on Tuesday night at Nationwide Arena to visiting Buffalo (25-18-6).
Game in a Paragraph
Columbus never led, though the Jackets did tie the game twice after Buffalo opened the scoring in the opening minutes. A three-goal second period by the Blue Jackets erased the Sabres' 3-1 advantage after one, but Buffalo scored early in the third to break the tie then held on for the victory.

Quote of the Night
Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno: "This is a huge two points for us, at home (that slipped away). It set up nicely for us to have a good start, too, coming off the break. There's a focus you need to have to be an elite team, and we just didn't have it enough tonight."
Bonus Quote of the Night
Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella: "I thought it was sloppy on both sides. We certainly out-sloppier them. But we're not going to put all the blame on (coming back from break). There were some major struggles around our net."

Quick Recap
Buffalo took advantage of defensive breakdowns in the opening 20 minutes to take a 3-1 lead into intermission.
It started just 2:14 into the game, as Sergei Bobrovsky slid from post to post to deny an odd-man rush chance by Casey Middlestadt, but Evan Rodrigues followed up the play and scored for his fourth goal in as many games.
Columbus got a burst of life 63 seconds later when, on a delayed penalty, Ryan Murray shot the puck from the center point and Dubois deflected it by Buffalo goalie Carter Hutton to make it 1-1.

The Blue Jackets had some good moments over the next few minutes but it slowly started to fall apart amid a period marked by a lack of energy and poor defending. The Jackets paid for it at 7:59 and 9:39 as Sam Reinhart and Tage Thompson scored similar goals when left wide open in the slot, with Bobrovsky unable to do much to stop either shot.
"It's funny about the first, I actually thought our first five minutes were really good, and then they kind of pushed and we didn't have that competitive edge that we need to have where you're hard on pucks, you're making the right plays, you're grinding," Foligno said. "We just didn't do it enough until the second."
Columbus needed just 21 seconds in the second period to make it a 3-2 game as the team scored on its first power-play since Martin St. Louis arrived as special teams consultant. Foligno took a pass from Artemi Panarin down low and was stopped by Hutton, but he followed the rebound and jammed it home from the crease.
But it took exactly 21 seconds for Buffalo to restore its two-goal lead. Jeff Skinner came in a lone on a feed by Jack Eichel, only to have his original shot stopped by Bobrovsky, but the goalie's momentum carried him - and the puck - into the net behind him.
A number of listless minutes followed, but Columbus scored twice late in the frame to make it 4-4 after two periods. Brandon Dubinsky made it a 4-3 game with 3:08 left as Josh Anderson centered it to Scott Harrington, and Dubinsky deflected his shot past Hutton and just over the line.
Then with 32.8 left in the period, Atkinson tied things up. As the puck squirted back to the blue line, Murray charged forward to keep it in, and the puck went right to the stick of Atkinson, who didn't miss from in front for his 28th goal of the season.

"Going into the third period, the way we played, to have a chance to win, we were fortunate," Tortorella said.
And Buffalo needed just 2:12 of the third to retake the lead. A long shift in the Blue Jackets' end concluded with a goal, as Bobrovsky saved Rodrigues' one-time blast from the left circle but Conor Sheary slid home the rebound.
Bobrovsky had a few big stops on the doorstep over the next few minutes as Columbus pushed for the tying goal, with David Savard's charge to the net on a feed from Atkinson the Jackets' best chance for a long stretch.
The Jackets pulled Bobrovsky with 1:56 left with an offensive zone draw but couldn't get the tying goal, though, and fell in its return home.
