MONTREAL – Hockey and country go together like two peas in a pod, like ice cream on a hot summer’s day, like peanut butter and jelly, like… okay, you get the point.

Something would be fundamentally wrong if you didn’t hear country music blaring in the Canadiens locker room (or any NHL dressing room for that matter) while the guys get ready to hit the ice.

But their love for the genre goes beyond the melodies themselves.

While some hockey players prefer to play it safe when it comes to their personal attire, other NHLers are willing to be a little more daring with their looks.

In many ways, Carey Price stood out whenever he let his inner cowboy shine. No one comes close to rivaling the Crease Cowboy’s western swag when he swapped his goalie mask for a custom Stetson.

When it comes to sartorial selection, Michael Pezzetta is also more than willing to let his cowboy flag fly. The Italian King will occasionally exchange his figurative crown for a cowboy hat, adding some western flair to his chic suit game.

His fondness for western wear goes back to his days with the Laval Rocket.

“A few years ago, we had a trip in Calgary with the team during COVID, and I thought it was a good idea to pick up a hat and some boots, and it kind of became a thing,” he recalled.

Turns out it gave the Canadiens’ affiliate a stroke of luck.

“The boys went on a two-week heater where we won eight games in a row, or something like that,” he continued. “Everybody was rocking cowboy hats and stuff and that kind of started my interest on the apparel side of things.”

To say that it’s just a general interest for him now would be an understatement. Pezzetta purchased his 10th (!) hat during the team’s trip to Nashville in March.

“My girlfriend’s going to kill me,” he joked. “They’re already taking up too much space [in our apartment].”

As Habs fans have seen over the last few seasons, the feisty forward’s ever-growing collection of headwear is not solely made up of cowboy hats.

There's a time and place for western attire, like on the team’s most recent trip to Nashville in March. He even strapped on his cowboy boots for the occasion.

“There’s something about having a nice pair of boots on. It just makes you feel like a million bucks,” he said proudly.

Unclear if his feet felt as good as he did, however. Just like a new pair of skates, cowboy boots take some time breaking in if they haven’t been worn in a while.

“I hadn’t worn my boots since the summer and I threw them on yesterday and we were doing a lot of walking,” he recounted. “My feet were absolutely destroyed. I felt like I couldn’t do it.”

His shopping partner, Alex Newhook, also shares a fondness for country paraphernalia, though perhaps not quite to the same extent as his teammate. Perusing the shelves at Big Time Boots on the city’s popular Broadway Street, Newhook opted for something a little more passe-partout.

“I feel like in Nashville, it’s kind of shocking to not leave with a country hat, but I feel good about it,” he shared.

They wasted no time debuting their brand-new accessories, arriving in style at Bridgestone Arena on March 5 en route to a 4-3 overtime win against the Predators.

With the season over, fans won't be seeing anymore western accents around the rink this year. That said, Pezzetta hopes to break out his cowboy hat and boots during LASSO Montreal this year, getting set to honky tonk around town all weekend with his teammates.

Let’s just hope he breaks in his boots ahead of time so he can fully enjoy the festival.
