Hughes returns in non-contact jersey at practice

Practice Details

Devils center Jack Hughes (upper-body) joined his teammates on the ice for practice in a grey non-contact jersey. He has missed the past 10 games.

Head coach Lindy Ruff didn't rule out Hughes playing sometime this week for the Devils, calling his status day-to-day.

"It’s a step in the right direction. He’s progressing," Ruff said. "This is just another step for him to get back into full contact."

We're Talking About Practice

The Devils enjoyed an eight-day break from play and practice due to the bye week and All-Star break. The team was back on the ice Sunday and Monday prior to its first game since the break Tuesday night when the club hosts Colorado.

The players used the break to get away from hockey and refresh for the final two-and-a-half months remaining in the regular season.

“It's good to have a little break and get yourself going with two practices. We worked on a lot of stuff,” captain Nico Hischier said. “It can be good to not think about too much. Take a mental break. Let your body heal a little bit. You have time to think about what you want to change. Find the motivation (again), come back and feel fresh mentally and physically. It’s been a good break for me and from what I’ve heard for other guys too.”

“It’s always nice to get that bye week and All-Star break,” veteran forward Erik Haula said. “Whether you’re struggling or doing well, either way it’s good to get away and reset at some point. It’s a long year and a lot goes into it. I’m sure every team in the league enjoyed their time.”

The Devils first time on the ice was Sunday. Not surprisingly, their practice session Monday was much better.

“Yesterday was just shaking the rust off,” Haula said. “Anyone watching could tell it wasn’t as crisp, guys don’t feel that great. That’s pretty normal. That’s why it was nice that we have the luxury of two practices. I thought today was really solid. The pace was a lot better and our execution. It was a good sign.”

And the head coach agreed.

“I thought the intensity level was a lot better,” Ruff said. “The speed in practice was a lot crisper. Passing, I thought everything was better. After a week off, I thought we made some strides today.”

Quote the Captain

Devils captain Nico Hischier had a few worthy comments from his conversation with the media Monday afternoon.

On the stretch run: "We want to be a playoff team. We need to win games for that. Everybody knows what’s at stake. We came here to prove that we’re a playoff team."

On the 2026 Olympics with NHL player participation: "That’s something as an athlete, I’ve never done. I want to be a part of that. The last two I couldn’t because it was what it was. It’s really exciting news that we’ll be playing. It’s far away, too, but that excited me a bit."

On Jesper Bratt being an NHL All-Star: "So well deserved. He works so hard. I was really happy for him. You could see his excitement when he was there."

D Focus

With 35 games remaining in the season, one focus for the Devils to finish the season is cleaning up the defensive end of their game.

“If you look at individual mistakes, you try to take them away,” Ruff said. “If you look at the Tampa game there were individual mistakes that we’d like those players to not make. We were in good position but we made individual mistakes that cost us chances in the game, it cost us a goal when we were getting back into the game. The scheme was good, but the execution part wasn’t good to get out of our zone.”

The Devils rank ninth in the NHL in offense with 3.43 goals for per game. But 29th with 3.55 goals against per game.

“Offense has never really been a problem for this team. We always harp on the defensive side,” Haula said. “Helping our goalies out and little things on the defensive side. I think that’s an area that we have to improve a lot if we want to make any run into the postseason.”
