WINNIPEG -Through two periods, the Winnipeg Jets found themselves trailing the St. Louis Blues 3-1.
Then the mentality inside the dressing room changed. The Jets came out and rallied back to tie the game - twice - before Jacob Trouba finished off a three-way passing play to give the Jets a hard-earned 5-4 overtime win.
In the words of Mark Scheifele, they played "Winnipeg Jets hockey" and it helped lead to a 15th consecutive game with at least a point on home ice.
"In the third period we pretty much just said 'screw it. Let's have fun, battle, and work for each other here,'" said Scheifele.
"It just shows that any game is in reach if you play the right way…. We were on the puck, we were working hard, we were battling for each other. That's how you win games in this league."

POSTGAME | Blake Wheeler

Scheifele finished with two goals and four points, while Ben Chiarot had a goal and an assist of his own. Bryan Little's third of the season with 1:40 left in regulation forced overtime, setting the stage for Trouba's heroics.
The Jets were outshot 25-16 in the first two periods, before firing back with 17 of their own in the third to the visitors' five.
The catalyst could have been the line shuffling head coach Paul Maurice went with. Moving Patrik Laine to the left wing with Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. Kyle Connor was with Bryan Little and Nikolaj Ehlers, while Mathieu Perreault was part of a trio with Adam Lowry and Andrew Copp.
But the captain believes it was more the Jets just playing the game the way they know how.
"It seems like we're carrying a lot of weight and carrying a lot expectations. It seems like it's inhibiting us from playing our game," Wheeler said. "In the third there was a little bit more freedom in terms of how guys were moving. It seemed like guys were breathing a bit and playing the game."
Despite the fans inside Bell MTS Place cheering at the final result, the early portion of the game wasn't what they expected to see.
Just 47 seconds into the opening period, David Perron found Ryan O'Reilly streaking down the middle of the ice. Perron's dish from the right wing hit him in stride, and O'Reilly - in alone - made a quick move to the backhand and beat Connor Hellebuyck up high.

POSTGAME | Mark Scheifele

The Blues would make it 2-0 with 9:03 left in the opening period when Colton Parayko's point shot deflected off the skate of Joe Morrow and past Hellebuyck for his second of the season.
Responding to that early adversity is a building block toward building this season's identity.
"Every game is a stepping stone for us. We have to continue to grow and we have to continue to build this group of guys," said Scheifele, who took over the team lead in points with nine in eight games.
"Those are the teams that end up being successful - the teams that build the whole year. We have to continue to grow our team to get better and better. That's how we're going to be successful this year."

STL@WPG: Trouba wins it in OT off Connor's great pass

A Brayden Schenn holding call gave the Jets their first power play of the night. The home side took full advantage, as Mark Scheifele's attempted pass in front from below the goal line went off the skate of Blues defenceman Jay Bouwmeester and through the legs of Jake Allen, bringing the Jets within one.
The Jets had two unsuccessful power play chances to open the second, but St. Louis would take advantage of a Jack Roslovic hooking call that came 8:35 into the middle frame.
Patrick Maroon's attempt from the side of the goal popped out into the slot area, and Vince Dunn, pinching from the point, put the rebound past Hellebuyck. His third of the season made it 3-1 Blues.
With Tanev ejected after a boarding major, the Jets shuffled the lines to start the third. It seemed to pay immediate dividends.
Killing that penalty off - though two minutes of it were played at four-on-four due to Dunn taking a hooking penalty - was a momentum shift in Maurice's mind.
"You have three minutes when you don't get a guy out of the box," said Maurice. "To lose an important penalty killer and to hold water in that second, then (we were) really good in the third."

STL@WPG: Little slams home the tying goal

Chiarot got the Jets within one when his wrist shot from the point shot through a screen and past Allen just 60 seconds into the third. Chiarot was involved again 2:57 later, as he drove to the net and his backhand created a rebound that Scheifele poked home for his second of the night, tying the game.
Perron put the Blues ahead again only 1:15 later, before Little was in the right spot to bang home a loose puck in the St. Louis crease with 1:40 to go in regulation to tie the game for a second time.
In overtime, Scheifele won a puck battle below the goal line, and fed Kyle Connor out front. Connor quickly sent it back over to Trouba who was wide open at the side of the net, and made no mistake.
"I thought Mark's last game as well and right through tonight's game, he got hard at tough times and battled. He won really big face-offs and worked hard to get open," said Maurice.
"He showed another side to his game. His intensity… I thought he was right on tonight."
The Jets now prepare for the final game of the six-game home stand, an all-Canadian tilt against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.
