ARI@VAN: Galchenyuk pots crafty overtime winner

VANCOUVER -- Alex Galchenyuk scored 1:54 into overtime to give the Arizona Coyotes a 3-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Thursday.

Arizona (28-28-5) moved one point behind the Minnesota Wild for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference. The Coyotes are tied with the Chicago Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche and are one point ahead of the Canucks (26-27-8).
"This is where we want to be, we want to be in that chase and we are doing whatever we can to get in there," Coyotes forward Lawson Crouse said. "We're a determined group right now and doing whatever we can to win hockey games."

Galchenyuk won it by faking like he was going behind the net to draw goalie Jacob Markstrom off his post before pulling the puck back out front and tucking it in. It was the seventh overtime goal in his NHL career.
"I came in with a little bit of speed and went behind the net and I saw the goalie was looking the other way, so I was like 'might as well,' and I am happy it went in," Galchenyuk said.
Adam Gaudette tied it 2-2 with 3:03 left in the third period for the Canucks when his shot off the rush went over Darcy Kuemper's glove from the right face-off dot.

ARI@VAN: Crouse roofs Archibald's pass for lead

Kuemper made 30 saves for the Coyotes, who are 5-2-0 in their past seven games.
"Kuemper kept us in it and we were able to come out and have a big third," Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun said. "We knew if we won the period, we won the game so go out and put a good 20 together and come out on top."
Arizona outshot Vancouver 20-5 in the third period, tying the game 1-1 on a power play at 10:34 when Chychrun's point shot deflected in off the stick of Canucks forward Jay Beagle.
Crouse put the Coyotes ahead 2-1 at 15:45 with a far-side wrist shot over Markstrom's glove from the bottom of the left face-off circle after a pass from Josh Archibald from behind the net.
Bo Horvat scored, and Antoine Roussel had two assists for the Canucks, who are 2-5-2 in the past nine games. Markstrom made 35 saves.
"When you have the lead you want to protect it and don't want to be gunning for offense late," Horvat said. "I thought we sat back a little bit too much and they kind of took it to us."
Horvat gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead at 9:47 of the first period after a nice play by Markus Granlund along the boards to create a turnover. Granlund passed the puck between his legs to Roussel, who drove the net and backhanded a cross-ice pass from the bottom of the right face-off circle to Horvat for a one-timer before Kuemper could get across.
Vancouver was 0-for-3 on the power play while leading 1-0, and is 2-for-30 in the past nine games.
"We've said it a lot lately, a power-play goal would have been nice tonight," Canucks coach Travis Green said. "It probably would have been the difference in the game if we could have got one in the first two periods."

They said it

"Just stick with it. I am a big believer you want that puck in situations like that. You can't be that guy that hopes it doesn't come to you. I just told them 'be that guy that wants the puck.' Embrace it. We're in the middle of February and we're still in the race. Injuries or not, we have guys here that can make marks on their career and there's 21 games left, so let's make a mark here." -- Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet on his message in the second intermission
"I liked our first two periods, for sure. I thought we had a lot of chances to get two goals. It would have been the difference if we could get another goal and get the 2-0 lead in a game like this. We knew they were going to push in the third, and they did." -- Canucks coach Travis Green
