Center Ryan O'Reilly will miss the Buffalo Sabres game against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday after having an emergency appendectomy on Christmas Day. O'Reilly, who has 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 27 games, is expected to miss at least two weeks. "Our understanding is that he'll need 10-14 days of rest and recovery, plus the time that it takes him to get back into game shape," coach Dan Bylsma said. William Carrier, who was be carried as a 13th forward, will replace O'Reilly in the lineup. Buffalo, which has lost four straight (0-2-2) could benefit from the three-day Christmas break, Sabres captain Brian Gionta said. "We need to forget about that last stretch and get back to playing our game," he said. "We got real sloppy in that last week before the break, and we can't afford that. We can't give away games in our position."
