Flyers-win-NHL

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers blew a three-goal lead but won 6-5 in the shootout against the Florida Panthers at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday.

"Obviously it's not the way we want to win the game at home, especially when you got a lead the way we had, but hopefully we can build on this," Flyers captain Claude Giroux said.

Jordan Weal, who had a goal and an assist, scored the deciding goal in the top of the third round.
Giroux and Wayne Simmonds each scored two goals for Philadelphia (3-3-0). Calvin Pickard made two saves on three shots in the third period after replacing Brian Elliott and denied two of three Panthers in the shootout. Elliott made 19 saves on 23 shots.
Frank Vatrano scored two goals for the Panthers (0-2-2). Michael Hutchinson made 21 saves but allowed Weal and Jakub Voracek to score in the shootout.

Philadelphia led 5-2 after Giroux scored his second goal at 17:03 of the second period. Mike Hoffman cut the Flyers lead to 5-3 at 17:31 with the first power-play goal of the season for the Panthers; they were 0-for-14. It was Hoffman's first goal with Florida.
Evgenii Dadonov made it 5-4 at 5:06 of the third, and Aleksander Barkov scored on a breakaway at 8:07 to tie it 5-5.
Philadelphia coach Dave Hakstol tried changing the momentum by switching goalies and calling a timeout after Barkov's goal.
"We didn't play the right way in the first 10 minutes of the third period," he said. "Gave up two breakaways and one Grade A chance from the slot, and that's all it takes. To our players' credit, they regained some composure in the last 10 minutes of the third, and we got going again."
Weal, a right-handed shot, used a move he learned from Voracek, a left-handed shot, in the shootout because Hutchinson catches with his right hand.
"Not every day you see the opposite-hand goaltender in there," Weal said. "Always wanted to be a lefty, so thought I'd try only something lefties can do on [left-catching] guys. Jake's move is so effective when he comes down with speed and sneaks it under the heel of the stick there. Thought I'd give it a try there."
Vatrano gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with 2:02 remaining in the first period when he found room between Elliott's right knee and the post. The Flyers have allowed the first goal in all six of their games.

Philadelphia scored five times in the second period, starting when Simmonds tipped a shot by Travis Sanheim past Hutchinson to tie the game 1-1 at 1:18. Weal tipped a Robert Hagg shot to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead at 5:54.
Giroux put Philadelphia ahead 3-1 when he scored at 8:50 off an Aaron Ekblad giveaway, but Florida got within 3-2 when Vatrano scored at 12:31.
Simmonds scored his second goal to give the Flyers a 4-2 lead at 15:29.

They said it

"I had the game in my hands to put us in another round of the shootout, and obviously it doesn't go in, so going to kick myself a little bit about that. We got another game coming up on Friday that we want to get two points."-- Panthers forward Frank Vatrano
"I think we have to do a better job to be prepared. They came out hot and they played really well in the first period. I thought [goalie Brian Elliott] did a good job for us weathering the storm, but in the second period we got our legs under us, we got it going." -- Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds
