DAL-PHI 12.16 recap

PHILADELPHIA -- Shayne Gostisbehere scored his second power-play goal of the game with 1:10 left in overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers their sixth straight win, 2-1 against the Dallas Stars at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday.
Flyers forward Jakub Voracek kept defenseman Dan Hamhuis' clearing attempt in the Stars zone at the right point and passed across to Gostisbehere. The defenseman skated to the inside edge of the right face-off circle and used a Wayne Simmonds screen to beat goalie Ben Bishop.

"You could tell the other guys on the power play, a lot of that power play was going rover, but we're feeding off each other, finding lanes," Gostisbehere said. "We were relentless. That goal at the end showed we weren't giving up there."

Bishop lost his stick with 1:19 remaining in overtime as he and Simmonds tried to play the rebound of a Voracek one-timer from midair.
"I didn't have my stick there, so I was just kind of holding Simmonds," Bishop said. "I thought we cleared the puck and the next thing I knew [Gostisbehere] was coming right down the slot, and obviously I didn't have a stick, so he made a pretty heads-up play just throwing it on the ice, and that was it."
Voracek had two assists and leads the NHL with 33, and Brian Elliott made 27 saves for the Flyers (14-11-7), who are on their longest winning streak since they won 10 in a row Nov. 27-Dec. 14, 2016.
Gemel Smith scored for the Stars (18-14-2), who were coming off a 5-2 loss at the New Jersey Devils on Friday. Bishop made 28 saves.

Stars forward Alexander Radulov was called for hooking Valtteri Filppula to prevent him from taking the puck out of the Flyers zone at 3:28 of overtime. It was his second offensive-zone penalty of the game; he was called for high-sticking Ivan Provorov at 8:35 of the third period.
"I think it's on me today," Radulov said. "I couldn't take those penalties. You got to deal with your emotions. … I put my team on their knees; can't do that. I take responsibility for that and make sure it never happens again."
The victory ended Philadelphia's seven-game losing streak in games that went past regulation (0-5 in overtime; 0-2 in the shootout).
"Obviously, we haven't been successful earlier in the season in overtime," Flyers captain Claude Giroux said. "We've talked about the kind of system and how we want to play in overtime. [Elliott] did a good job on a couple of the shots they had, but overall we played pretty well."

It was Bishop's first game since allowing four goals on 38 shots in a 5-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Dec. 9.
"He was outstanding," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He was focused and outstanding, and you could tell all during the day he was going to play like this. He plays like this, this gives us a chance to win every night."
Smith gave the Stars a 1-0 lead at 7:13 of the first period when his one-timer from the right circle beat Elliott.
Gostisbehere tied the game 1-1 at 9:10 of the second period.
Hitchcock remains one win shy of his 800th in the NHL. He trails Scotty Bowman (1,244) and Joel Quenneville (867) on the League's all-time list.

They said it

"At the end of the day, we're not going to get any better until our impact players have a strong, positive impact on the game on a consistent basis. Can't continue to have the role players on the hockey club carry the hockey club. We need more from the people that … you know exactly who I'm taking about. They need to come through to carry us to the next level." -- Stars coach Ken Hitchcock
"Just keep playing the right way, making the right decisions. If you have to put the puck deep, you have to do that. … We've just got to play our game, and if we play hard all 60 minutes, lots of times we'll win the game."-- Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov
