TORONTO -- Curtis McElhinney made 41 saves to help the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 1-0 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Air Canada Centre on Sunday.
McElhinney was starting for the first time since a 4-2 loss against the Washington Capitals on Nov. 25. It was his first shutout of the season and his first win since a 4-1 victory against the Boston Bruins on Nov. 11.

"I felt great. The back-to-backs are always tough, sometimes there's not a morning skate and you're kind of left to your own devices," McElhinney said. "I got a good skate in this morning by myself and things felt pretty good overall. It certainly has its challenges, but being here for almost a year now I'm pretty familiar with [getting the start on the second of back-to-back games]. I've kind of got the hang of it, I think."
Zach Hyman scored the only goal 34 seconds into the game for the Maple Leafs (20-10-1), who have won three in a row and are 11-3-1 in their past 15 games.
"It started by scoring first obviously," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "We knew we had to start on time, and we did. I thought our goaltender was real good, our penalty killing was outstanding. In the end, we spent too much time in our zone, but it was a big night on the back-to-back and a big win for us."
Laurent Brossoit made 22 saves for the Oilers (12-16-2), who lost for the second time to the Maple Leafs this season after a 6-4 defeat on Nov. 30.

"I thought both times we played Toronto, we brought our A-games both times," Oilers forward Pat Maroon said. "I'd say out of six periods, we won five. It's one of those things, we can't hang our heads. We have to find ways to bounce back against Columbus (on Tuesday).
"I thought the last two games, we did some really good things. This is a game I feel like we should have had it. We threw everything and the kitchen sink at them. Their goalie just made some good saves."
Edmonton had a 5-on-3 power play for two minutes at 17:38 of the second period when Mitchell Marner was called for tripping and Roman Polak for cross-checking, but failed to score.
"Anytime you kill off a two minute 5-on-3, you get a momentum boost," Hyman said. "Leo (Komarov), Ronnie (Hainsey) and (Nikita) Zaitsev were out there for almost two minutes. They were huge for us."
Hyman scored the only goal of the game when William Nylander carried the puck into the zone on the left wing and passed to Jake Gardiner, who one-timed a shot from the blue line that Hyman redirected between Brossoit's pads.
"We wanted to keep the gas on them, but it ended up being a 1-0 game," Hyman said. "McElhinney played unbelievable and was a big reason we won."
The Maple Leafs had a 5-on-3 power play for 18 seconds at 10:11 of the second period when Zack Kassian was called for hooking but failed to score.

Auston Matthews did not play for Toronto because of an upper-body injury sustained in a 4-3 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. He collided with Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly with 2:50 remaining in the third period but played two more shifts.
It was the fifth game Matthews missed because of an injury this season. Toronto is 5-0-0 without Matthews in the lineup.
Babcock said he thinks Matthews will be ready for Toronto's next game (Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers) but "isn't 100 percent sure."

They said it

"The guys in this room believe. We're not out of this thing yet. We're far from out of it. We just have to win December. If we go into Christmas .500, this team is going to have some good success going forward. We can't really think about what happened tonight." -- Oilers forward Patrick Maroon
"Well 200 feet away, you can just kind of see him sneaking around at the far blue line building up speed. You're just trying to stay with him and hopefully he doesn't deke you out of your pants. Those are turning points for games and saves you want to make. Last time for me it wasn't there; tonight, I came up with the big saves." -- Maple Leafs goaltender Curtis McElhinney
