The Flyers led 5-3 before defenseman Rasmus Andersson scored his first NHL goal with 1:08 remaining in the third period. Center Sean Monahan tied the game 5-5 with seven seconds left in regulation, and forward Johnny Gaudreau won it by scoring 35 seconds into overtime.
Monahan became the third player in the NHL this season to score a game-tying goal in the final 10 seconds of the third period; the first two were San Jose Sharks center Tomas Hertl (two seconds left) in a 4-3 shootout loss to the New York Rangers on on Oct. 30 and Chicago Blackhawks forward Alex DeBrincat (two seconds left) in a 5-4 overtime win against the Florida Panthers on Nov. 24.
The goal was Monahan's 20th of the season; he is the first player in Atlanta/Calgary Flames history to score at least 20 goals in each of the first six seasons immediately following his draft year.
The Flames joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as the only team in the NHL's modern era (since 1943-44) to have three comeback wins after trailing by multiple goals in the final two minutes of the third period. The Flames also did it at the Washington Capitals on March 13, 1999, and at home against the Nashville Predators on Nov. 3, 1999. The only team to trail by two goals in the final two minutes and win in regulation was the Dallas Stars, who trailed the Boston Bruins 5-3 with 50 seconds remaining on Oct. 14, 1995, and scored three goals in a span of 44 seconds for a 6-5 win.
