The Vegas Golden Knights have 11 defensemen on the roster, but two months before the start of their first training camp, general manager George McPhee said he isn't in a rush to reduce that number.
"We're at a manageable number right now," McPhee told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Friday. "We're pretty close to where we want to be and we're comfortable with the roster we have. ... We'll be busy the next few weeks. But we're rolling along and looking forward to training camp in our new facility."

One of those 11 defensemen is Nate Schmidt, who was selected from the Washington Capitals in the NHL Expansion Draft on June 21 and is a restricted free agent. Schmidt has an arbitration hearing scheduled for Aug. 3.
"We'll do our best to reach a deal," McPhee said. "But we're comfortable with the arbitration process because it gets the deal done."
The Golden Knights had three first-round picks -- centers Cody Glass (No. 6) and Nick Suzuki (No. 13), and defenseman Erik Brannstrom (No. 15) -- and signed each of them to a three-year, entry-level contract with an average annual value of $925,000.
"What I'm really happy about is we signed them to the right deals and got some money in their pockets," McPhee said. "All the deals made sense and were fair to both sides."
McPhee, who was hired by Vegas on July 13, 2016, assessed his first year on the job.
"All your success begins and ends with the people you hire," he said. "We hired some quality people who performed brilliantly. We got high marks from a lot of people and we're very pleased with how the year went."
Vegas will begin its first season at the Dallas Stars on Oct. 6 and will play its first regular-season home game at T-Mobile Arena against the Arizona Coyotes on Oct. 10.
