OTT@NSH: Rinne denies Tkachuk from point-blank range

NASHVILLE -- Austin Watson, Ryan Ellis and Craig Smith scored to help the Nashville Predators defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-1 at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday.

Pekka Rinne made 25 saves for the Predators (20-10-1), who had lost two in a row. They are in first place in the Western Conference with 41 points and are 9-0-0 against Eastern Conference opponents.
"I thought that defensively we did a really good job," Rinne said. "They didn't have much of anything all night. Just a solid defensive game]. I mean, we needed that win. You could tell."

Zack Smith scored for the Senators (13-15-4), who are 1-3-1 in their past five games and have scored two goals or fewer in five consecutive games. Craig Anderson made 33 saves.
"We're missing six guys and I thought the guys gave everything they had," Ottawa coach Guy Boucher said. "You could see that they were the older, more mature team, and when they got their push it was hard for us to keep up with that push. The guys fought, but we needed to get that second goal there earlier and keep it tighter."
Jean-Gabriel Pageau (Achilles), Mark Borowiecki (upper body), Matt Duchene (groin), Bobby Ryan (concussion), Christian Jaros (lower body) and Dylan DeMelo (upper body) missed the game for the Senators because of injury.
Ellis gave the Predators a 2-1 lead at 9:01 of the second period on a one-timer from the slot. He started a give-and-go with Roman Josi and scored his third goal.
"It's more just read and react," Ellis said. "I mean, we've been playing together here for a while and [Josi] is so mobile, so if I can get moving it helps him out and vice versa. We try to create as much space as we can for each other and see what happens when we do."

Craig Smith made it 3-1 at 1:59 of the third period. He skated around Senators defenseman Max Lajoie and scored his ninth goal.
"I try to get wide a lot of times," Smith said. "When you get wide like that it puts a lot of pressure on them. Guys come back into the zone trying to pick up guys, so it's tough to defend. I was just able to get behind him and make a nice play."
Zack Smith gave the Senators a 1-0 lead on their first shot 26 seconds into the first period, a backhand from the right face-off circle. It was his fifth goal.
Watson tied it 1-1 at 15:38 on a redirection from the slot. Mattias Ekholm took the original shot, and Watson scored his sixth goal.
"It was good for us to get back on the winning trend," Watson said. "Always nice to come back home and play in front of our fans, we always talk about that. A really good group effort from our guys tonight."

They said it

"Obviously we're hoping for some guys to come back at some point. Six regulars missing, for us that's gigantic. Hopefully maybe we get some guys back for Friday, and every guy will matter. We've got two days now to regroup and we'll need it because that three in four was tough. It took a lot out of us." -- Senators coach Guy Boucher on injuries and dealing with three games in four days
"I thought we played predictable for each other. That was part of the game plan. I think when you're predictable and you know what your teammates are going to do you can pretty much read off it a few seconds before the play is going to happen. I thought we were able to get possession of the puck when we did have to chip. That was a big part of the game, putting pressure on them and being able to hang on to pucks."-- Predators forward Craig Smith
