The Tampa Bay Lightning goalie, in his first game back from a fractured foot, came up with a brilliant effort on a puck that looked like it would inevitably become a goal during a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.
After initially saving a deflected shot from the point, Maple Leafs forward Patrick Marleau corralled the rebound and tried to backhand the puck past Vasilevskiy. But that's when the Lightning goalie made a save that has to be seen to be fully comprehended.
As the puck was bouncing around near the goal line, Vasilevskiy lowered his right skate on top of the fluttering disc, trapping it on the ice and dragging it away from the net, almost like an air hockey player would do with one of those old-school red handles.
Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman quickly cleared the puck after it escaped Vasilevskiy's grasp.
