ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Max Pacioretty made his first goal with the Vegas Golden Knights count, and Erik Haula scored the only goal in the shootout in a 2-1 win against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center on Saturday.

With Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury pulled for the extra attacker, Jonathan Marchessault found Pacioretty in the slot to tie the game 1-1 with 1:31 left in the third period.
"We really liked our game. We liked our close-up game, how we were fast on pucks, creating turnovers and getting chances," said Pacioretty, who was acquired in a trade from the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 9 after he spent his first 10 NHL seasons in Montreal, the past three as captain. "We missed some chances, but we knew eventually it would come, that's just the way it works. I'm able to get a great pass and a great screen, and from my end, it's weird that's the one that goes in, but that's how it goes sometimes."

VGK@MIN: Pacioretty ties it late with one-timer

Pacioretty had five shots on goal after he was limited to one in his Vegas debut, a 5-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.
It was the first win for the Golden Knights against the Wild after they lost all three games in their inaugural season.
"Our team was excellent tonight," Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said. "That's the way we have to play to be successful, and it was fun to play that way. … Sometimes, results don't happen there, but [we] were playing well and [we] kept pushing it and pushing it. It paid off. The hockey gods came through late in the game when we played well, played a real good game, lots of shots on net, and finally we scored with goalie pulled. The guys stuck with it. They played hard and they played our game."
Defenseman Matt Dumba gave the Wild a 1-0 lead when he scored with a slap shot from the right point at 9:23 of the first period off a backhand pass from Charlie Coyle off the right wall.
Devan Dubnyk made 41 saves for the Wild, who lost 4-1 in their season opener at the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.
Fleury made 29 saves.
"[Dubnyk] was fantastic," Wild forward Jason Zucker said. "He's the only reason that we didn't lose that game 10-0."

VGK@MIN: Haula nets winner in the shootout

They said it

"No, I was trying to win a hockey game. I don't care if he's from Minnesota or where he's from. [Erik] Haula's a good goal-scorer, so that's why he went. If it would have been in Buffalo, he probably would have went third too, so had nothing to do with that. I felt he played good tonight and he had some good opportunities, so just comfortable going with him." -- Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant on if he used Haula in the third round of the shootout because he played for the Wild and at the University of Minnesota
"Of course it concerns me. You want to come out and jump out and have a 3-0 lead right off the bat, but it hasn't happened yet. We'll look at the tapes of both games, we'll compare and see why, and like I said, I don't have an answer for you right now. Maybe it's they want to make everything perfect. But the one thing I've found out in this league right now is you gotta skate. You gotta be able to skate. If you're not skating, you're left in the dust. We tried to make too many plays standing still in the first two periods." -- Wild coach Bruce Boudreau on their early struggles
"It's obviously going to be a little frustrating for a day or so, but it's kind of always this way this time of year, so you get used to it. It's obviously a good time to practice. You get two real games under your belt and see where things are at, and then you go back to practice. But I think with us, we as a group know how we have to play, and when we do, we're extremely tough to beat. So I've got no doubt in my mind that we'll pick things up a little bit." -- Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk
