"The Washington Capitals' journey to hoisting the Stanley Cup was as poignant as it was thrilling," said NHL Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President Steve Mayer. "The team involved their loyal fans every step of the way. We worked hard to capture and present those magical on and off-ice moments, incredible plays and the unique personalities of their favorite players so their fans can relive and cherish this franchise's first ever Championship."
For the Capitals, the road to the Stanley Cup® featured a deficit in every series along the way. After falling behind 2-0 in the First Round to the Columbus Blue Jackets, a thrilling double-overtime victory in Game 3 spurred Washington to four straight wins and a matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Second Round. Silencing their critics and defeating the demons that have haunted them in past years, the Capitals bested the Penguins in six games to set up an Eastern Conference Final meeting with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Washington trailed Tampa Bay 3-2 in the series before back-to-back shutout performances from All-Star goaltender Braden Holtby lifted the Capitals to the next round. In the Stanley Cup® Final against the League's newest team, the Vegas Golden Knights, Washington clinched the Stanley Cup® via a comeback victory in Game 5, sealed by Lars Eller's goal midway through the third period. The win cemented the Capitals' first Stanley Cup® since the team joined the NHL® 44 years ago.
