EDMONTON, AB – The Edmonton Oilers are expected to have Evander Kane and Mattias Janmark in the lineup on Monday night for Game 1 against the Kings, Head Coach Kris Knoblauch said pre-game.

“We believe everyone's fine and healthy to play, and we'll have a couple of extra guys out there for warm-up just to make sure,” the bench boss said.

Kane revealed following Sunday’s practice that he’s been battling a sports hernia injury all year and that he wasn’t on the ice for the Oilers’ final two games of the regular season or their first playoff practice on Saturday as he tried to get ahead of the injury and being ready for puck drop on their first-round series against LA.

The 32-year-old winger is projected to start on the fourth line tonight, but Coach Knoblauch said on Saturday that it could only last for the first five to 10 minutes of the first period before he’s potentially worked back into the top six.

With a player of Kane’s calibre available to them, the Oilers will want to maximize his impact after scoring 16 goals in their last 27 playoff games – 13 of which were scored in 2021-22 to lead the League in playoff goalscoring.

The Blue & Orange are hoping he can get back to that playoff form where he can thrive despite the lingering issue. Kane went 21 games without scoring during the second half, but he was able to pick it up before sitting out the concluding games of the regular season with three goals in his final five games.

“When Evander’s able to play and healthy, we want him in the lineup,” Knoblauch said after Sunday’s practice. “And depending on his health and how well he's playing, we'll obviously be using him more if he can play like we're anticipating him to play.

“But right now, cautiously, we're just putting him in a minimal role. But after five to 10 minutes of the first game, that's probably going to change.”

Janmark was also absent from Saturday’s skate with an undisclosed injury, but like Kane, the Swede was on the ice yesterday for the Oilers’ full-team practice at Rogers Place and is expected to play in Game 1 alongside him on the fourth line. Forward Connor Brown is expected to be the odd-man out along with Derek Ryan and Troy Stecher on Monday.

Coach Knoblauch and his staff will have the full plethora of healthy players to choose from tonight when the 45-year-old bench boss makes his NHL playoff coaching debut, including a handful of options who could slot in and out of the lineup throughout the series depending on matchups and game flow.

“We've got a lot of guys who are playing well,” he added. “We're going to be taking somebody out, which is going to be tough.”

During Saturday’s practice, Kane and Janmark took line rushes with Sam Carrick, signalling that Dylan Holloway looks to have secured his spot in Edmonton’s Game 1 lineup alongside Corey Perry and Ryan McLeod on the third line.

The 22-year-old has the versatility to play both wing and centre and enters the 2024 Playoffs in strong form, scoring in three of his last six games and showcasing his speed and skill as an asset for the Oilers over their run to the Stanley Cup.

Holloway’s speed plays strongly alongside another fast forward in McLeod and a veteran in Perry, who is the only player on the Oilers roster to have lifted the Stanley Cup – a feat he accomplished back in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks.

“From what I've seen, Dylan has instilled a lot of confidence in myself and the coaching staff and all the players on the team with how well he's played with a simple, direct game and a lot of tenacity and physicality,” Knoblauch said. “He's been able to chip in quite significantly with his role since he's been called up, chipping with goals and assists, but I just think the puck play gives us the most confidence with a young player.

As expected, it will be Stuart Skinner's crease to defend for the Oilers – and for the rest of the playoffs should everything go well – after the Edmonton-born netminder won 36 games this regular season, posting a 2.62 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

Having the luxury of being able to utilize Calvin Pickard at any moment they feel necessary is an added bonus for the Oilers, but it's Skinner's crease to lose as he looks to take a big step in his post-season career following the 2023 Playoffs, where he started 12 games and went 5-6-0 with a 3.68 GAA and .883 SV%.

"There's not a plan to use both, but if you look at how things have gone in the NHL the past five or six years on how many teams have used two goalies, Stuart is our guy," Knoblauch said. "For him to go four rounds and us not use Picks, I'm not sure that's going to happen. But certainly, we don't have a plan on saying there's a rotation, or if Stu is playing the first two and then Picks is playing the third.

"So right now, Stu is our guy and we will play it day-by-day. But as I said, the plan is for him to play hopefully all of them."
