Buffalo Sabres netminder Dustin Tokarski won the goaltending battle against Jacob Markstrom on Friday, making 24 saves in a 1-0 victory over the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome.
Tage Thompson capitalized on a miscue by Markstrom to steal the puck in front of the net with 1:53 left in overtime to score his first-career overtime goal.
Tokarski earned the second shutout of his career. It happened just over eight years ago to the day from his first shutout, which came on March 16, 2014 against the Sabres.
It was also Buffalo's first team shutout since October 25, 2019, a span of 175 games.
Markstrom made 33 saves on 34 shots for Calgary.
Heading into Friday's game, 26 of Buffalo's last 29 games had been decided in regulation, including each of the last 15 contests.
Buffalo's power play finished 0-for-3 and the penalty kill was 1-for-1.
The last time Buffalo needed more than regulation to win 1-0 came in a shootout win at Ottawa back on December 4, 2010. Thomas Vanek scored the only goal in the shootout and Ryan Miller made 32 saves, plus three more in the skills competition.
