The Buffalo Sabres couldn't convert on early opportunities and eventually opened the door for the Boston Bruins to control play in a 5-0 loss at TD Garden on Thursday.
Dustin Tokarski made 27 saves in Buffalo's final road game of the year.
For Boston, Patrice Bergeron recorded a hat trick while David Pastrnak and Taylor Hall. Linus Ullmark stopped 37 shots to earn his first shutout of the season.
Buffalo's power play went 0-for-3 while the penalty kill finished 2-for-6.

How it happened

Buffalo outshot the Bruins 12-6 in the first period and had some prime opportunities, but couldn't get the puck past Ullmark.
Bruins finally cashed in 6:16 into the second period on a goal from Bergeron during a sequence that featured a few great chances that were foiled by Tokarski.
Bergeron scored again with 7:31 left in the period when he found himself alone in front.
Buffalo challenged the play for offside, but the call stood following video replay and the Sabres then found themselves shorthanded.
At the 2:11 mark of the third period, Pastrnak slipped in a backhand on the power play to put the Bruins up by three.
Buffalo again challenged for offside, but review upheld the goal, keeping Boston on the power play. Hall capitalized at the 4:16 mark of the period to make it 4-0.
Bergeron completed the hat trick with his 400th-career goal with 2:13 remaining in regulation.
