The Buffalo Sabres had the game tied up early in the third period, but the Boston Bruins pulled away, scoring three times in the third period to hand Buffalo a 5-2 loss Thursday night at TD Garden.
Casey Mittelstadt and Sam Reinhart scored for the Sabres while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 36 saves.
David Pastrnak, David Krejci, Charlie Coyle, Taylor Hall and Brad Marchand tallied for Boston. Tuukka Rask stopped 29 shots.
Buffalo was 0-for-2 with the man advantage and was 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.

What happened

Boston took an early lead when Pastrnak scored on a 2-on-1 just 1:16 into the contest.
Then, with 5:51 left in the opening period, Mittelstadt pounded home a rebound into a wide-open net.
On the power play, Boston regained the lead just before time expired in the first period. Krejci's last-second shot found its way in past Luukkonen to make it 2-1.
Reinhart tied things up 1:43 into the third period when he one-timed in a quick feed in front from Victor Olfosson.
But at the 7:58 mark of the third, Coyle powered in over the Sabres line off a turnover and muscled his way to the net and beat Luukkonen top shelf glove-side to put Boston back in front.
Krejci faked out two Sabres defensemen to set up Hall with 3:17 remaining in the third to make it 4-2.
Buffalo went on the power play with 2:13 left in regulation and pulled Luukkonen in favor of the extra attacker to make it a 6-on-4 situation.
Marchand scored on the empty net with 1:34 remaining.

-Reinhart has 11 points (9+2) in his last nine games, including at least a point in each of his last four (6+1).
He has recorded 15 points (10+5) in 16 games during the month of April. Reinhart leads the team in both goals and points this month.
-Mittelstadt extended his point streak to four games (2+2). He has totaled 14 points (9+5) in his last 17 games dating back to March 31.
-Earlier in the day, former Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller, now with the Anaheim Ducks, announced that he will retire at the end of the season. Miller, 40, is in his 18 th season and has more wins than any other U.S.-born netminder.
He played 540 games with the Sabres from 2002 through 2014 and is the franchise's leader in wins and saves.
