20220313 Krebs Hinostroza Mediawall Final Horn

The Buffalo Sabres scored four unanswered goals, including three in the third period, to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 on Sunday at Tim Hortons Field at the 2022 Heritage Classic in Hamilton, Ontario.
Peyton Krebs and Vinnie Hinostroza both scored twice for the Sabres in the outdoor showcase and Tage Thompson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in front of 26,119 fans. Craig Anderson made 34 saves to earn the 301st win of his career.
Ondrej Kase and Auston Matthews scored for Toronto while Petr Mrazek stopped 33 shots.
Buffalo's power play finished 0-for-3 while the penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4.

How it happened

After no goals were scored in the first period, the teams traded tallies during the second period.
The Maple Leafs opened the scoring 40 seconds into the middle frame. Off a faceoff win, William Nylander fired a shot on net and Kase kicked the rebound to his stick and tapped it in.

TOR@BUF: Krebs buries great wrist shot

Buffalo responded 42 seconds later with a goal by Krebs. Hinostroza, jumping off the bench, found Krebs in the slot for his fifth goal of the season.
Matthews gave Toronto the lead back at the 2:57 mark of the second when his quick shot beat Anderson.

TOR@BUF: Hinostroza benefits from own-goal

The Sabres tied things up with 9:07 to go in the period. Hinostroza went to center the puck from the right wing and the puck went off Toronto defenseman TJ Brodie and in.
Buffalo outscored Toronto 3-0 in the third period.
Hinostroza scored again, potting one from a bad angle in the left-wing corner to give the Sabres their first lead of the game.

TOR@BUF: Krebs lights the lamp again

The officials ruled that Buffalo took a 4-2 lead with 6:11 remaining when the net was knocked off by Mrzaek as Krebs' one-timer from Dylan Cozens went in. The officials reviewed the play and the goal determined that it was a good goal.
Toronto pulled the goaltender with 3:56 remaining in a 4-on-4 situation as both Rasmus Dahlin and Auston Matthews were in the penalty box following crosschecking minors.
With 3:19 to go, Kyle Okposo ended up in the box for tripping and Toronto, with Mrazek on the bench, ended up with a two-man advantage.

TOR@BUF: Thompson scores SHG in 3rd period

But while shorthanded, Thompson buried the puck into the empty cage with 2:25 left to make it 5-2.
As an extension of the sequence that sent Dahlin and Matthews to the box minutes earlier, tensions escalated after Thompson's goal with players squaring off.
The game eventually ended with a handshake line. These two teams will meet again on Tuesday, April 12 in Toronto.

Worthy of a mention

The Sabres entered the stadium honoring the Flint Tropics:

Today's game marked Buffalo's third appearance in an outdoor game as a franchise, which also includes the 2008 Winter Classic against Pittsburgh at what is now Highmark Stadium and the 2018 Winter Classic against the New York Rangers at Citi Field.

The Sabres became the 12th team in NHL history to play in at least three regular-season outdoor games and the fourth to have three appearances as the designated home team.
