Victor Olofsson saw his shot from the left faceoff circle pinball off of bodies in front of the New York Rangers net and deflect in off the arm of goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. For a moment, it seemed the Sabres had completed a comeback with 56.2 seconds remaining.
Olofsson's game-tying goal was overturned after video review deemed the play offside. The Rangers held on for a 2-1 victory at KeyBank Center on Saturday.
Georgiev made 36 saves for the Rangers, who received goals from Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere.
Brett Murray scored the lone goal for the Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 29 saves.
The loss was Buffalo's sixth in a row (0-5-1).
