20221019 Lyubushkin LECOM

EDMONTON - Ilya Lyubushkin is day to day after exiting Tuesday's game against the Edmonton Oilers with an injury, Sabres coach Don Granato announced.
Lyubushkin completed his final shift of the second period with 10:45 remaining. He returned for one 23-second shift to begin the third period but did not play after that.
The injury came during an eventful game for the defenseman. In 8:36, he delivered two highlight-reel hits and recorded two blocked shots.
"He played very well for us and we missed him in the third," Granato said.

Lyubushkin did not skate while the rest of the team practiced in Edmonton on Wednesday, prior to departing for Calgary and a meeting with the Flames on Thursday night.
The Sabres practiced with six defensemen in his absence. In the event Lyubushkin does not play in Calgary, Casey Fitzgerald - a fellow right shot - could join the lineup for his season debut.
Here are more notes from practice in Edmonton.

AFTER PRACTICE: Granato

1. JJ Peterka has points in three straight games to open the season after scoring on a breakaway Tuesday. He's the fourth rookie in Sabres history to open a season on a three-game point streak, joining Tyler Ennis (2010), Calle Johansson (1987), and Victor Olofsson (2019).
"We're seeing his talent and his skill," Granato said. "I think any time a guy with ability like that sees the back of the net, he feels better about his game. It's a boost of confidence. I think it's going to be a tremendous help for him to get a feel of early success."

2. Peterka has played on the wing alongside Dylan Cozens through the first three games of the season. The Sabres hold edges in shot attempts (25-20) and scoring chances (14-9) when they have been on the ice at 5-on-5, according to Natural Stat Trick.
"What's most impressive that they both is the change of gear," Granato said. "If you think about it, you're attacking and the defensemen are trying to time you, but you've got another gear that they can't get to as fast as you can. That's where those two are extremely gifted and potentially dangerous."
3. Vinnie Hinostroza made his season debut alongside Peterka and Cozens on Tuesday. He earned the assist on Peterka's goal and drew a penalty.
"It'd be hard even to think of taking Vinnie out," Granato said. "That doesn't mean it might not happen - we haven't made any decisions. But we know that we have a healthy team right now and in training camp.
"… Everybody's going to eventually have quality time. It's the way the NHL, pro sports go. Early on, this is a challenge. So, whether he's in or not tomorrow, he played a hell of a game last night and we know he's an effective player who can help us win games."
