All-state forward Connor Kelly assisted on both goals in a win that gives the Stampede a chance to win their second championship in three seasons.
"Flood of emotions, I was just telling my team this is the first time I've ever cried tears of joy, " Kelly said. "I didn't sleep for like a week thinking about this."
Waubonsie/Metea entered the state tournament as a #5 seed and faced top-seeded Glenbard in the semifinal. After racing out to a 4-1 lead, the Warriors held off a furious Glenbard rally behind 44 stops from goalie Alex Lee.
A year after exiting the tournament with a 12-1 loss, the Warriors pulled off two upsets over higher-ranked teams to reach the championship.
"When we get to the United Center, I'm going to let them run around and explore. They're going to run up and down the hallways and I'm probably going to have security all over them just to keep them in one spot," Warriors coach Jim Frasco said. "It was one of our goals at the beginning of the year. It was a far-reaching goal, but we never gave up on it."
General admission tickets for the event, which include parking, are available for $5, and can be purchased online at chicagoblackhawks.com, in person at the United Center Box Office or by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000.
The Boys Red Division State Championship game will be broadcasted live on NBC Sports Chicago and streamed on NBCSportsChicago.com with Chris Boden and Jamal Mayers on the call.
