MONTREAL – The Canadiens got off to a great start against the defending Stanley Cup champs, but couldn’t contain the Golden Knights’ comeback attempt and lost 6-5 to Vegas on Thursday.

The Canadiens welcomed the Golden Knights to the Bell Centre a little over two weeks after facing them in Nevada.

It was an emotional night in Montreal, as the Club and the Bell Centre crowd bid farewell to Karl Tremblay, the lead singer of Les Cowboys Fringants who passed away from cancer this week.

Cayden Primeau made his third start of the season and had a busy night at the office. He turned aside 36 of the 42 Vegas shots he faced.

Alex Newhook and Johnathan Kovacevic scored to give the Habs a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Jesse Ylönen enjoyed the first two-goal night of his young career; it was his third multi-point game in the NHL. Nick Suzuki, Newhook, and Mike Matheson picked up two points each for the Habs. Justin Barron scored a goal in the game’s final minute to bring the Canadiens to within one.

Arber Xhekaj left the game after the second period with an upper-body injury and did not return. He was a plus-3 in 10:19 of ice time after 40 minutes.
