The New Jersey Devils wanted to add a veteran goaltender this offseason to be a 1a-1b tandem in net with Mackenzie Blackwood. They got their man Wednesday with the
signing of Jonathan Bernier
to a two-year, $8.25-million dollar contract.
The veteran goaltender has 11 years of NHL experience and nearly 400 games played (394) in his career with stops in Los Angeles, Toronto, Anaheim, Colorado and Detroit. Bernier, a Laval, Quebec native, was a first-round pick (11th overall) in the 2006 NHL Draft by the Kings and was a member of their 2012 Stanley Cup championship team.

Bernier, 32, is a throwback goaltender. He doesn't have the size of modern netminders at 6-foot, 184 pounds. He relies on his butterfly style, technique and reflexes.
Bernier will be a steadying presence in the crease and will lighten the workload for Blackwood. The extra rest will keep both tenders fresh throughout the season, and the competition should also help push both players to be better. The Devils have certainly strengthened the goaltending position with this signing.
