WASHINGTON, DC - The Devils got back in the win column on Sunday night in Boston, shutting out the Bruins 1-0.
"We were back to Devils hockey in that Bruins game and that's the way we have to play," said Devils Head Coach Lindy Ruff.
And that effort and result will meet an equally tough task in the Washington Capitals tonight.
"We've got to play a complete 60 minutes. We know that they're a team that can burn you at any given moment. We have to limit their opportunities."
LOCK IT DOWN ON THE PK
The Devils have had their shares of struggles on special teams all season long, but the penalty kill has shown some recent signs of a turnaround.
"It's been really good I think," said Devils forward Nate Bastian. "We struggled at the start, new killers against really good power-play units. I think we're trending the right way… We rely on each other and trust each other more and it's starting to pay off."
We'll see if the Devils penalty kill is up to the challenge that is the buzzsaw of a Capitals power play, which is scoring at a 26.2% clip, seventh-best in the NHL.
"We have to limit their opportunities by playing a disciplined game," said Ruff. "You have a shooter like Ovechkin who really only needs one shot if they're taking him away. They've got other options. They've got a veteran guy there on the blue line that is as good as anybody getting shots through and shooting it."
BACK TO WEDGEWOOD
Scott Wedgewood earned a second-straight start with his 40-save blanking of the Bruins. He'll be back between the pipes tonight in Washington, D.C.
"Definitely. Played a great game for us, battled extremely hard, and we ended up getting the win," said Ruff. "We need him late there on the 6-on-5 when we gave up 3-4 opportunities where he made great saves for us."
The biggest thing Wedgewood did on Sunday, was be there for the team when there were breakdowns.
"When we made mistakes, he was there for us."
ZACHAMANIA
If Pavel Zacha was a secret around the league he isn't so secret anymore. He rode a 10-game point streak from January 30-February 28. But after being held off the scoresheet against the Islanders and Rangers (in their first meeting) last week, the Devils forward has points in two straight.
"I'm finding him [to be a] guy who wants to make a difference," said Ruff. "He has made a difference. He wants to improve in the small areas of his game. His compete, his puck battles, the 50-50 battles, have been better and I think he's getting rewarded for hanging on to pucks in the offensive zone."
Perhaps there's no better example of that latter asset than the game-winner in Boston. He possessed the puck in the offensive zone and worked out some space for himself, dropping it for P.K. Subban, which ultimately led to a scramble and score.
"He's getting to the right spots."
