Green Sports Alliance

The NHL became a Member of the Green Sports Alliance (GSA) in June 2011. The Green Sports Alliance leverages the cultural and market influence of sports to promote healthy, sustainable communities where we live and play. The organization inspires sports leagues, teams, venues, their partners and millions of fans to embrace energy and water efficiency; renewable energy; sustainable food; responsible procurement; socially responsible practices; and other environmentally preferable actions. GSA members represent nearly 400 sports teams and venues from 15 different sports leagues and 14 countries. All 31 NHL Member Clubs are part of the Green Sports Alliance. RinkWatch

Hockey players build outdoor rinks to share them with friends, neighbors and family; to give us a place to play outside in the coldest months; to keep our kids healthy; and to give them a place to practice their skating skills and dream big. The rink is a physical manifestation of all the best qualities of our society. Through an initiative called RinkWatch, Wilfred Laurier University is using data provided by outdoor hockey players to track how variations in weather conditions are affecting skating seasons. The difference between -5°C and -4°C is a significant tipping point for the 'skatability' of natural, outdoor ice rinks; one degree in variation matters. Get in the game at rinkwatch.org.

Sport and Sustainability International

Through global partnerships with NGOs, the business community and government agencies, Sport and Sustainability International (SandSI) is mobilizing the sports industry and its fans in support of the world's most progressive and meaningful ecological policies, including the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
