DÍA DE MUERTOS CELEBRATION

October 28 at 7:30pm vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Designed by Dan Marquez Kuhlken

The auction has closed for this specialty jersey.

In celebration of Día de Muertos, the LA Kings teamed up with local illustrator Dan Marquez Kuhlken. Dan was born and raised in Southern California in a mixed culture household. His mom is Mexican and his Dad is German/Welsh. Dan was heavily influenced by the Mexican folk art and Alebrijes (colorful wooden animal sculptures) that decorated their house growing up. For Dan, this project hit all the marks: the opportunity as a Mexican American artist to create a piece celebrating Día de Muertos, while also getting to celebrate his home of Los Angeles.

Dan included hidden gems in the art to touch on different themes. A Bird of Paradise, the flower of LA, Day of the Dead classics like Papeles Picado, woodcut textures and sugar skulls, and hockey theme with hidden hockey sticks and Mexican stylized versions of the classic Kings shield, LA text and crown.

She also drew from traditional symbols of the dragon representing “yang” (of yin and yang), which is associated with fire and being active. Dragons are known to control the weather namely, wind and water, which can be seen on display in the jersey crest. The imagery is a proud acknowledgment of all the barriers that have been broken by pioneering women and the doors this has opened for younger generations.
