In 2015, The Hockey News unveiled its list of the top 100 hockey jerseys of all time and the San Jose Sharks original sweater has been selected as No. 1.

The original sweater took the sports and fashion worlds by storm becoming a global sensation, along with the team's fierce shark-biting-hockey-stick logo.

TEAL: Worn as the road sweater from 1998-99 until 2003-04, became primary home sweater from 2005-06 to 2006-07. Description same as the third sweater for 1997-98 (NOTE: starting in 2000-01, the sleeves returned to the mesh material like the rest of the sweater). 

WHITE: Worn as the home sweater from 1998-99 until 2003-04, became primary road sweater from 2005-06 to 2006-07. Like the teal sweater, the white had white porthole mesh on the sides. The sleeves used a teal, gray and black shimmer sheen fabric (NOTE: starting in 2000-01, the sleeves returned to the mesh material like the rest of the sweater). The flared V-neck collar was black with teal trim. Sleeve numbers were white with black trim. Numbers on the back were teal with white and black trim. The name on the back had teal arched lettering. 

THIRD: This solid black sweater debuted on Oct. 27, 2001 and was worn at selected home and road games. The sweater included the round "fin" logo on each shoulder, teal and white stripes on each sleeve, the flared V-neck collar in black with white trim, white numerals with teal and gray trim, black porthole mesh on the sides and the name on back in arched white lettering.

These sweaters debuted at a time when the entire NHL changed over to the Rbk EDGE Uniform System. This was the first time an entire North American professional league embraced a uniform innovation. These sweaters utilized technologically advanced materials and fabrics that are more breathable, more water-resistant, more comfortable and more compatible with equipment.

But the major change came in the look, starting with the crest. The primary crest still had the shark chomping down on a hockey stick, but the updated look incorporated more Pacific Teal (the primary color) and emphasized speed, strength and determination. The eight supporting marks (with most of them making their way onto each of the sweaters) also utilized the same characteristics - right down to the showing of the shark tail.

THIRD: The alternate sweater made its debut during the 2008-09 season. The all-black sweater combined the classic tradition of previous Sharks sweaters with the updated look that debuted in 2007-08. The full-body Shark logo was used as the crest. The sleeve stripes featured two white stripes bordering a thicker swatch of Deep Pacific Teal. The shoulder patches displayed a shark fin in a diamond with the letters "SJ." The sweater numbers on the sleeves and back were white with teal trim. The name on the back was on white letters. Finally, the third sweater had a "tie-string" neck, a subtle homage to hockey sweaters of the past.

Clean, classic, bold and designed for performance, the Next Wave sweaters were designed for optimal performance on the ice. The sweaters use the Reebok Play-Dry Stretch Fabric for comfort and for temperature control. To decrease the weight of the sweater, the black shoulder cap was removed. The popular jumping Shark patch remains on the shoulder. Even more weight was cut out by removing the stripes on the body of the sweater. To complete a classic look, neckline lacing was added and neckline striping was removed. The classic crest logo will still be the centerpiece of the sweater.

The player's number, located above the crest, on the sleaves, and on the back, are in white lettering with a black trim. Each shoulder has the jumping Shark logo. The sweater has neckline lacing, a homage to hockey sweaters from years past.

WHITE: Also debuting during the 2013-14 season, the white sweaters were worn during away games. The look is unfettered, with the Pacific Teal contrasting against the white fabric. Similar to the teal sweaters, each shoulder has the jumping Shark logo and neckline lacing. The player's number, located on the sleeves, on the back, and above the crest, are in Pacific Teal with a black trim.

The San Jose Sharks faced the Los Angeles Kings in the team's first ever outdoor game on February 21, 2015 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. 

With a larger venue than typically used for hockey games, Reebok worked with the Sharks to create an amplified version of the hockey jersey with the hopes of looking sharper in the football stadium environment. New jerseys were unveiled that featured larger numbers, a new shoulder patch and bolder, streamlined visuals.

San Jose's jersey for the Stadium Series game feautred a horizontal striping look of teal, white and black on the front and all teal on the back. 

A new patch was created and placed on the left shoulder of the jerseys. It says Northern California in a circle around the outline of the state with a star placed for San Jose and a dorsal shark fin in the southern part of the state.

The 2015-16 season marked the Sharks 25th Anniversary and in September, the team unveiled the Smith-designed "Heritage Jersey", which the team wore on select dates during the celebration. Five years later in 2020-21, the Sharks donned the Heritage Jersey once again to commemorate the 30th Anniversary.

This sweater was developed by Terry Smith, who created the original Sharks logo and many of the other iconic designs associated with the team. The Heritage Jersey is modeled after the Sharks original sweater with slight modernization to the team's logo while utilizing the team's current teal. According to Smith, "The sweater represents the present of the Sharks franchise while paying stark homage to the past."

The new ADIZERO Authentic NHL jersey will make it's on-ice debut for the 2017-18 season. 

While much of the teal jersey will appear the same, as San Jose worked with adidas to preserve the team's current uniform identity, the team did take advantage of uniform platform change to introduce the Screaming Sharks secondary mark on the shoulders of the jersey. The jersey will also feature the phrase "This Is Sharks Territory" on the inside of the neckline and the addition of black on the outside of the neckline.

The Sharks added the new adidas adizero Authentic Pro third jersey at a preseason game in September of 2018, when the newest member of the team, defenseman Erik Karlsson, unveiled the Stealth design while also being introduced to fans for the first time.

In collaboration with adidas, the Sharks set out to create an all-new look that pays homage to Northern California, embraces the tech culture of the region, and adds to the predatory nature of Sharks with a sleek new black-on-black look.

Fusing the future with the past, the sleeve stripes feature a digitalized circuit pattern that subtly incorporates a "SJ" pattern, while tonal shoulder patches are a throwback to the original patches worn from 1991-1997. Additional details include "This is Sharks Territory" is emblazoned across the interior neckline.

After a successful first go around, Adidas and the NHL partnered once again to bring the Reverse Retro program back for another season. This time the Sharks went with a nod to when hockey first came to the Bay Area, the California Seals. They remixed the green & yellow to a Sharks version with bright teal & yellow. Add in a new Sharks wordmark in Seals typography and you got yourself a beautiful sweater.

In 2020, the NHL announced the start of a first ever, all-team alternate jersey program known as Reverse Retro. Each team was to design a Reverse Retro jersey representing unique and historical moments in each club's history, while refreshing the color and design combination for an all-new presentation. The Sharks threw it back to the Sharks humble beginnings. They went with a "Heritage" style jersey complete with the Sharks recognizable crest, combined with sleeve numbers and point accent that brought back vibes from the team's 1998 season.

More than a jersey, Cali Fin represents community - whether passionate Sharks fans across Nor Cal or the culture and history that made the region what it is. It blends details of the past and present to represent an iconic look on and off the ice. Putting on the jersey, it creates a sense of pride for players, fans and all of Northern California.

Back in Black: This represents the fourth time in team history that black is used as the base color of the uniform.

Fin-ally: The Evolve Fin on the jersey crest is a modern representation of a symbol used since the team's inception and marks the first time a shark head does not appear on the front (non-Reverse Retro).

Community Dyes: The teal and black yarn-dye pattern on the sleeves, waist, and socks celebrates the cultural significance of textile arts in the region and to the Hispanic community.

Nor-Cal Proud: The re-imagined, popular Northern California Shark-fin shoulder patches which were revised from the 2015 Stadium Series patch, is a salute to Sharks fans and supporters throughout the region.

It Bites: The shark tooth pattern incorporated into the neckline adds an aggressive edge to the design and a nod to the "Chomp".

Accessories Make Everything Better: The Sharks now feature an alternate helmet, glove and pant shell look for the 2023-24 season to pair with the Cali Fin jersey and you guessed it, they're all black.
