Ducks clinch playoff berth during win

VANCOUVER --The Anaheim Ducks clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs during a 4-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Tuesday.
The Ducks (42-23-11), who have won five straight games for the first time this season, clinched when the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 earlier Tuesday. The Ducks are two points ahead of the Oilers for first place in the Pacific Division.

"In the last little while we have been focusing on the process of our team, not what else is going on out there," said Ducks goalie Jonathan Bernier, who made 34 saves. "And that's where we're having success."
Corey Perry scored 23 seconds into the game, Patrick Eaves made it 2-0 at 1:37, and Nick Ritchie scored with 15.4 seconds left in the first period for Anaheim.
Brandon Montour made it 4-0 at 3:44 of the second period. Bernier, who made 16 of his saves in the third period, is 9-0-1 with a .947 save percentage in his past 10 starts.
"We know what's at stake. We've been building for this all season and that was the goal -- to make the playoffs -- and we did that tonight, and now it has to snowball from here," Perry said. "It definitely helps when you are playing well and you do it. We want everything in our hands."

Brock Boeser ended Bernier's shutout bid 2:34 into the third period with his second goal in three games since signing with the Canucks after his college season ended Friday.
Ryan Miller made 35 saves for Vancouver (30-37-9), which has two wins in its past 11 games.
"We gave them three goals and then we started playing," Canucks captain Henrik Sedin said. "It's too good of a league to do that against a great team."
Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf was a late scratch because of a lower-body injury.
"It was a little bit of a surprise, but it was important for the start," coach Randy Carlyle said. "Everybody was kind of shocked. To me, I just presented it as another challenge."
Getzlaf, who leads the Ducks with 66 points (14 goals, 52 assists), took part in the pre-game skate and is listed as day-to-day.
"He didn't feel right this morning and couldn't get it loosened up," Carlyle said. "So we just made the decision we're not going to sacrifice a guy who's been our best player in the situation we were presented with tonight."

Antoine Vermette (two assists) stole the puck behind the Canucks net and Ritchie quickly centered it out front to Perry in the slot for a quick wrist shot high over Miller's glove.

Miller got his left pad on Perry's breakaway deke 7:15 into the second period.

Ducks center Nate Thompson won eight of 15 faceoffs and had three hits in 14:55 of ice time.

Highlight of the game

Boeser, who was selected by the Canucks in the first round (No.23) of the 2015 NHL Draft, beat Bernier between the legs with a wrist shot from beyond the left circle. "I just want to get a puck to the net there and luckily there's a screen and it trickled in," he said.

Ducks goalie John Gibson dressed as the backup after missing seven games and 13 of the past 14 because of a lower-body injury. … The Canucks were missing top-pair defenseman Troy Stecher, who sustained an upper-body injury against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. He could return Friday.
