McDavid lifts Oilers to overtime victory with 2 goals

EDMONTON -- Connor McDavid scored two goals, including his 60th of the season in overtime, to give the Edmonton Oilers a 4-3 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Rogers Place on Wednesday.

McDavid scored from in tight at 1:31 of overtime, moments after missing on a breakaway off a backhand pass from Leon Draisaitl, who had four assists. It was McDavid's 299th NHL goal.
"Leon makes a great play on the first pass, and I felt like I was kind of pressing for the 60th all night, and I was disappointed not to bury that one, you're not going to get many better looks than that," McDavid said. "It's not every day you get two breakaways back to back like that. He made two unbelievable plays. Just ridiculous."

ARI@EDM: McDavid roofs OT winner for his 60th

McDavid is the 22nd NHL player, and fourth active, to score at least 60 goals in a season, joining Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Captials (65 in 2007-08), Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning (60 in 2011-12) and Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs (60 in 2021-22).
He is the third player in Oilers history to score at least 60 goals in a season, joining Wayne Gretzky (five times) and Jari Kurri (twice).
In reaching 60 goals in 72 games, he's the fastest player to hit the milestone since Mario Lemieux scored 60 goals in 70 games in 1987-88. Matthews needed 73 games last season to reach 60.
"He's going to downplay it, as we all know, but it's pretty hard to score in this league, and to score 60 in a season and still have 10 games to go is pretty remarkable. He is just a special player," Draisaitl said. "He obviously missed the first one [in overtime] and he was telling me he slammed his stick against the boards after. I just saw their guy bobble it, so I tried to strip him, and I saw Connor again. It is crazy to try that same move again and score on it the second time, but that is just what he does, I guess."
the 26-year-old is on pace to finish with 68 goals this season, but if he scores 10 in his final 10 games, he would be the first player to score at least 70 goals in a season since 1992-93, when Alexander Mogilny (Buffalo Sabres) and Teemu Selanne (Winnipeg Jets) each had 76.
McDavid's previous NHL career high in goals was 44, which he set in 80 games last season.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice, and Stuart Skinner made 14 saves for the Oilers (41-23-8), who have won five straight to move within two points of the Los Angeles Kings for second in the Pacific Division.
Clayton Keller scored two goals to extend his point streak to 10 games, Nick Schmaltz had two assists, and Connor Ingram made 27 saves for the Coyotes (27-33-12), who were coming off a 2-1 loss at the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.
"I think we had some good urgency," Keller said. "It was a tough back to back for us, but I think we did a good job. We were a little sloppy at the start and we didn't want to put them on the power play, and it was good for us to kind of just stick with it and play a mucky game and get a point out of it."

ARI@EDM: McDavid nets PPG from below goal line

McDavid scored on a power play at 5:47 of the first period to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. He banked in a shot from below the goal line off the back of Ingram's mask for his 59th goal of the season.
J.J. Moser tied it 1-1 on a power play at 15:47 when he carried the puck into the zone, dropped it off and went to the net, where he tapped in a backdoor pass from Matias Maccelli. It was Moser's first goal since Dec. 29 (38 games).
"We worked hard, and I think the boys did a good job on a lot of fronts," Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. "They're obviously really good on their power plays and that was a big factor. Our guys never quit, they kept going, they have of character, they play for each other. There are a lot of guys who are willing to suffer for each other and there is a huge brotherhood in that room."

ARI@EDM: Keller scores while falling to the ice

Keller scored at 3:37 of the second period to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead. Schmaltz stole the puck from Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchardbehind the net and centered it to Keller, who scored on a backhand.
Nugent-Hopkins tied it 2-2 at 19:50 following a turnover by Coyotes forward Laurent Dauphin to Draisaitl behind the net. Draisaitl sent a pass out front to Nugent-Hopkins, who scored from the slot.
"When you look at that game tonight, we gave up 17 shots on net against a team that has lost one time in regulation in their last 10 (6-1-3)," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. "I think it's important to realize Andre Tourigny and his staff do a heck of a job, his team plays very hard. They played hard tonight. Though we didn't give up a lot, I thought there were some situations we could handle a little bit better that ended up in the back of our net."

ARI@EDM: Nugent-Hopkins evens score with second goal

Keller responded for the Coyotes to make it 3-2 at 8:54 of the third period, taking a cross-crease pass from Barrett Hayton and roofing a shot into an open net. Keller has 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) during his point streak.
Nugent-Hopkins tied it 3-3 at 12:17 on a breakaway off a stretch pass from Draisaitl.
