Miller, Fox lead Rangers' incredible OT comeback win

NEW YORK -- K'Andre Miller tied it with one second left in the third period, and Adam Fox scored in overtime to give the New York Rangers a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against the Dallas Stars at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

Miller said he didn't know how much time was left when he scored but that he could feel the energy in the building. He made it 1-1 on a 6-on-5 goal from the left face-off circle, scoring on his own rebound after the initial shot was blocked by Stars forward Luke Glendening.
"Scrum in front of the net, puck popped right to me," Miller said. "I honestly thought 'Troch' (Vincent Trocheck) was going to take it right off my stick, but he did a good job. I was coming down Main Street and I just tried to get a puck on net."
Miller got emotional after the game when talking about a message he got earlier in the day from his mother.
"My mom texted me today and she was giving me a lot of motivation, so it's pretty easy for myself to focus up for these types of games when I have support like that from her," Miller said. "I think the biggest thing would be just that she loves me and she's proud of me and she's there even though she's not there. Games like these, I know she's not in the stands, but I feel her presence and I think that's everything in a mother-son relationship. It's a special bond."
Fox's winner came after he got the puck from Artemi Panarin in front of the crease. He moved it to his backhand and roofed a shot past Stars goalie Jake Oettinger at 1:16.
"I looked up and I know 'Otter' is a pretty big goalie and I didn't see much there, so I just took it to the backhand and tried to put it on the far side," Fox said. "I just came in there late and benefitted from it."
Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves in his 20th win of the season for the Rangers (24-12-7), who have points in seven straight games (5-0-2), including two straight comeback victories. They won 4-3 in a shootout against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday after trailing 3-2 in the third period.
"They're big," Fox said. "Our division is tight and the difference could be a point or two here or there, so to get the extra point in these last two games has been pretty big."
Tyler Seguin drew a penalty that led to him scoring a power-play goal, and Oettinger made 29 saves for the Stars (25-11-7).
Dallas had won its previous two games, including a 2-1 shootout victory at the New York Islanders on Tuesday.
"It's pretty tough," Oettinger said. "It's hard. It [stinks]. I'll probably be thinking about that for a while."
Oettinger was one second away from getting his third shutout of the season and fifth of his NHL career.
"We were that close, you know," he said. "You're less than a second away and it ends like that. It's brutal."
Seguin gave the Stars a 1-0 lead at 17:53 of the second period.
Denis Gurianov carried the puck into the zone down the left-wing wall and tried to set up Mason Marchment for a one-timer in the left face-off circle. Marchment whiffed, but the puck went directly to Seguin, who scored from the right hash marks.
New York was 0-for-3 on the power play in the second period prior to Dallas scoring on its only man-advantage of the game with Ryan Lindgren in the penalty box for roughing Seguin at 16:59.
"Our execution, our attention to detail was where it needs to be playing against a good team on the road," Stars coach Peter DeBoer said. "The other night against the Islanders I didn't think it was for 60 minutes and Jake had to bail us out. Tonight, I thought we gave Jake a much better chance to win the game because our details and execution were a lot better."
Miller was on the ice with Shesterkin pulled at the end of regulation largely because the Rangers did not have left wing Chris Kreider available. Kreider missed his first game of the season with an upper-body injury and is day to day.
Without Kreider, New York coach Gerard Gallant turned to Miller because of his production lately. The defenseman's goal extended his point streak to five games (seven points; three goals, four assists). Miller has goals in back-to-back games and 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in 17 games since Dec. 5.
He had eight points, all assists, in his first 26 games.
"It's something I've been trying to implement in my game over the years," Miller said. "I know what kind of player I can be. I know I can produce and shut down at the same time. It's just a matter of believing in that and bringing that same attitude every game."
NOTES: Stars center Roope Hintz missed a second straight game with an upper-body injury. … Rangers forward Julien Gauthier collided with teammate Sammy Blais in the first period and left the game with an upper-body injury. He is day to day. … Fox has nine points (two goals, seven assists) during a six-game point streak. … New York forward Kaapo Kakko had one shot on goal and played 19:56 in his 200th NHL game.
