LAK@EDM: Kempe nets PPG for second goal of game

EDMONTON --The Los Angeles Kings scored three goals following a major assessed to Connor McDavid in the third period of a 5-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Sunday.

Adrian Kempe scored two goals, and Drew Doughty had a goal and two assists for Los Angeles (10-9-4), which is 2-1-1 in its past four games. Jonathan Quick made 21 saves.
"I don't think you beat the Edmonton Oilers unless you check," Kings coach Todd McLellan said. "If you open it up and play a freewheeling game, you're not going to win. Checking and patience led to opportunities for us, and we took advantage of them."
Darnell Nurse scored for Edmonton (16-7-0), which lost consecutive games for the first time this season. Mikko Koskinen made 35 saves.
"They kind of just trapped us in the neutral zone. We need to play down low, and we didn't do that tonight," Oilers forward Warren Foegele said. "It comes down to having better starts and being more consistent and playing hard for each other. As a group, we just have to bear down and keep it simple to start the games."

McDavid was assessed a boarding major and a game misconduct for a hit on Kempe with 6:33 left in the third period.
On the ensuing power play, Kempe scored on a rebound off a one-timer from Arthur Kaliyev at 14:38 to make it 3-1.
Doughty then pushed the lead to 4-1 at 16:03 off a pass from Anze Kopitar, and Trevor Moore scored at 16:57 to make it 5-1.
"We have to find a way to get the kill," Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. "We have to find a way to bear down and not give up three. The PK has been strong for us all year, so it's tough to give up a couple like that."
Rasmus Kupari scored at 2:01 of the first period to give the Kings a 1-0 lead. He tapped in a pass that Moore lofted over sprawling Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg.
Kempe made it 2-0 at 1:42 of the second period, scoring on a shot from the right face-off circle.

Nurse, who missed the previous six games with a broken finger, cut it to 2-1 at 10:04 with a shorthanded goal. He lifted the puck over Quick from a sharp angle on a 3-on-2 rush.
"This has been coming for a while now," Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. "We've been masking it with some special teams stuff, but we haven't played well. We haven't had enough guys play well for a while."
The Kings held the Oilers to just four shots in the third period, all coming before McDavid was ejected. Edmonton was outshot 40-22 in the game.
"They got some chances late in the second and in the third. We basically didn't give them much and when we did, Quick was amazing," Doughty said. "He's been great all year. He deserves a lot of credit for the wins we have this year. We played a good third period, probably the best that we have this year."
NOTES: Prior to Sunday, McDavid had never been assessed a major or game misconduct during a game. He received a game misconduct for abuse of officials after scoring the shootout winner in a victory against the Calgary Flames on Jan. 25, 2018. … Doughty's three-point game was the 12th of his career, tying him with Larry Murphy and Mark Hardy for third-most by a defenseman in Kings history. Steve Duchesne ranks first with 19, and Rob Blake is second with 17. … Los Angeles is 7-2-3 when leading after two periods this season.
