Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin will not play against the New Jersey Devils on Friday (7 p.m. ET; SN360, ROOT, MSG+, NHL.TV) because of an upper-body injury.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said the issue is something that has been bothering Malkin for a while. Sullivan said he expects to have more information on Malkin's status Saturday.

Malkin is fifth in the NHL with 72 points and tied for fourth with 33 goals. He missed seven games from Jan. 26-Feb. 11 with a lower-body injury.

Defenseman Ron Hainsey is week to week because of an upper-body injury sustained against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, Sullivan said. Hainsey sat out the third period of the 4-0 loss.
The Penguins have four defensemen out because of injury: Hainsey, Kris Letang (upper body), Olli Maatta (hand) and Trevor Daley (knee). Forward Carl Hagelin (lower body) also is out, but forward Patric Hornqvist (concussion) returned to the lineup Friday.
