The forward was fined $3,017.24, the maximum allowable under the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement, and Boughner was fined $5,000.
During warmups, Gabriel cross-checked Los Angeles defenseman Kurtis MacDermid in the back near center ice. The two, who were teammates with Owen Sound of the Ontario Hockey League from 2011-14, then fought in the first period, with each receiving a five-minute major.
"While we want our players to play hard, it has to be done within the context of the game and whistle to whistle," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. "We agree with the League's assessment that these altercations are not acceptable, and we do not condone this type of pregame interaction. The League has made it clear that these types of actions will not be tolerated, and we have addressed it internally."
The Sharks also were assessed a conditional fine of $25,000, which will be collected, in addition to any subsequent discipline, in the event of similar inappropriate behavior through March 22, 2022.
The fine money goes to the NHL Foundation.
The Sharks and Kings play again in San Jose on Wednesday (10:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SNE, SNO, SNW). Boughner said he will decide after the morning skate if Gabriel will play, The Mercury News reported.
"Internally we want to make sure that we handle this properly," Boughner said, according to the newspaper.
"He plays on the edge, with a ton of passion. But it's got to be controlled. He can have a nice career in this league and he's got to keep it between the whistles. Not happy about being fined, obviously, but the League has made its decision. We respect it, we agree with it, and it's not going to happen again under my watch."
