"This is my fourth season (with the Mets) and I've been lucky enough to forge a friendship with Howie," Cosell told NHL.com. "A friend of Stephane's told me he'd be hanging out at the game Sunday, right in front of Howie's booth, so I just thought we had to jump on this."
The Mets played the video clip with the call [all the way through Rose's iconic "one more hill to climb, baby!" exclamation] on the scoreboard before showing Matteau, wearing a blue and orange Mets hat.
After a thumbs up to the crowd, Matteau and Rose shook hands.
Cosell, the grandson of legendary broadcaster Howard Cosell, does weekday games for the Mets while his colleague handles weekends, so he wasn't on the scene, but he was able to share the moment thanks to the video work of Nick Boffardi.
"I was home cooking dinner for the family," said Cosell, who also handles duties for the Brooklyn Cyclones, a Mets minor league affiliate, the New York Riptide lacrosse team and the University of Stony Brook Athletics in addition to co-hosting the 'Sport of Entertainment' podcast. "But 14-year-old me was going absolutely crazy."
Rose thanked Cosell and tweeted it was "terrific to see Steph."
