Red Wings at Flyers | Recap

PHILADELPHIA -- Scott Laughton scored four goals for the Philadelphia Flyers in a 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Wells Fargo Center on Thursday.

It tied the Flyers record for goals in a game, and was the first four-goal game by a Flyer since John LeClair on Oct. 15, 2002.

It carried Laughton past the 100-goal milestone, giving him 102 for his career.

"It's pretty cool," Laughton said. "Two empty-netters but I know they all count. I think 100 goals, you don't look at it really but I've been in the league a long time [12 seasons] and it's hard to score goals in this league. To score 100 is pretty cool to me, pretty special. I know it's not much compared to some guys but it feels pretty cool to get that."

Travis Konecny had two assists for Philadelphia (14-12-4), which won consecutive games in regulation for the first time since Oct. 29-31. Aleksei Kolosov made 25 saves.

"I think it was just a matter of being patient, not opening up and trying to be a liability defensively," Flyers forward Sean Couturier said. "It was that kind of game where it's who's going to open up first. Thought in the second [period] we took over and had a lot of quality [offensive] zone time and chances.

DET@PHI: Laughton scores four goals against Red Wings

Cam Talbot, in his first game back after missing four because of a lower-body injury, made 32 saves for Detroit (11-14-4).

"He was unbelievable," Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin said. "Big save after big save. Someone that's meant that much to our team, we can't really have his first game back be a game like that, giving up odd-man [rushes] and backdoors. He bailed us out but we've got to bail him out."

Laughton put the Flyers ahead 1-0 at 13:22 of the second period. Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson tried cycling the puck back to the point in the Philadelphia zone but there was no one there. Laughton grabbed the loose puck, skated in alone, and beat Talbot with a slap shot from the hashmarks.

He made it 2-0 at 1:31 of the third on a short-handed goal. Travis Sanheim blocked a shot in the Philadelphia zone, and Konecny jumped on the loose puck and led a 2-on-1 rush. He passed through Red Wings defenseman Erik Gustafsson and Laughton crashed the net to tip it in.

It was Philadelphia's second short-handed goal of the season and first since Oct. 12. The Flyers led the NHL with 16 short-handed goals last season.

"Great play by [Konecny] finding me backdoor," Laughton said. "Got loose somehow, and found a way. We haven't really been that great on it the last couple weeks so it's nice to pot one there and get the ball rolling in the right direction."

Larkin felt allowing that goal was the turning point in the game.

"We give up looks and we knew they were going to be dangerous looking for chances when they're down a guy and they did just that," he said. "Couple 2-on-1s and it's in the back of our net and we're down two."

Ben Chiarot made it 2-1 at 16:07 with a shot from the blue line. It was the defenseman's first goal of the season.

Kolosov kept the Flyers in the game with 11 saves in the third period, including a lunging glove save on a shot from the right side by Gustafsson with 3:23 remaining.

"Just the way the game went for him, it's a difficult game," Flyers coach John Tortorella said. "And to get the scoring chances he got in the second half of that third period and how he stood in there, he was really good. That glove save ... that's a huge save."

Laughton capped his hat trick with an empty-net goal at 18:53 to make it 3-1. He added his fourth goal into an empty net at 19:47 to close the scoring.

There was a long, loud ovation for Laughton in the locker room after the game.

"He's probably the best teammate you can ask for," Couturier said. "He means so much to us. He plays throughout the lineup in different roles, in different situations. It's not always easy but he always has a great attitude and thinks about the team first and does whatever he can to help the team so it's nice to see him rewarded tonight."
