EDMONTON, AB -Whether he's aware of it or not, Connor McDavid revved his motor to 40 km/h at one point in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Calgary Flames.
"You try to get your legs moving as fast as you can and just try to make the play," the centre said Thursday following practice. "You're not thinking about how fast you're going or anything like that. As long as you're going faster than the other guy, that's all that matters."
McDavid left several Flames players in the dust in the home opener, separating himself with each stride.
Defenceman Eric Gryba gets a unique perspective of McDavid's jets. On many occasions, the rearguard is on the ice when McDavid takes off.
"It's freakish speed," the grizzled blueliner said. "He's able to play at that top speed and make world-class plays at that speed. Nobody can do that.
"Except him."
McDavid scored every Edmonton goal against Calgary, recording his second career hat trick and first at Rogers Place. He became the first Oilers player to score three in a season opener.
