PRE-GAME REPORT
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Oilers enter a crucial back-to-back set against the L.A. Kings and Anaheim Ducks starting tonight in Los Angeles. The Ducks currently have the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference but if the Oilers can sweep this set, they would be ahead of the Ducks in the standings by the time the dust settled on Sunday night.
But before all that happens, the Oilers need to defeat the Kings tonight and despite the Kings sitting last in the West, it won't be an easy task.
"We've had two really tough games against them. We played one of the best hockey games we've played and it took a late power play goal to beat them in our building. These games are very close and we're going to have to keep this game close early," stated Olers head coach Ken Hitchcock. "We get a team that's pretty angry right now. They'll get our attention early. It'll be a good contest, especially early."
Hitchcock added that he's liked how the Oilers have played lately. They had a six-game losing streak snapped on Wednesday with a win in Arizona.
"We've played two really good hockey games the last two. We didn't beat Winnipeg but we played very well and we played well in Arizona. We want to continue to keep playing well. Wins will come if you keep playing at the pace we're playing at right now," he noted.
"I've liked a lot of things we've done the last two games and we want to continue to keep that game going. It's a work-based game. We've been very physical on the puck and those are the things we're going to have to do."
SATURDAY'S LINEUP
The Oilers went with the following lines at morning skate:
Draisaitl - McDavid - Kassian
Rieder - RNH - Chiasson
Lucic - Khaira - Puljujarvi
Spooner - Brodziak - Rattie
Gambardella
Nurse - Larsson
Jones - Petrovic
Gravel - Manning
Russell - Benning
Alex Chiasson has been activated from injured reserve as expected and will play tonight.
It's expected that the defence pairing which makes the cut will be Kevin Gravel and Brandon Manning. Hitchcock said after morning skate that when Russell does return, he would like to see him paired back up with Darnell Nurse.
"The one pair we like is Russell and Nurse. Everything kind of flows from there until Klefbom gets back. We like that."
Hitchcock added that he could see Russell return either tomorrow in Anaheim or Tuesday in San Jose.
"The one pair we want to get focused on (is Russell and Nurse). Russ is testing it right now to see if he can go tomorrow or in San Jose and if he can do that, we'd like to see that pairing get back together. That's the one element we're pretty defined on right now."
Mikko Koskinen will get the nod in goal.
JONES CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
Caleb Jones has been very impressive in the eight games he's played for the club. So much so that as defencemen start to return, his spot in the lineup is secure for now.
"We're in a very unique position in that if Caleb Jones continues to play like this, he's not coming out of the mix and can play either side. He's played more right than left even," said Hitchcock.
Jones said as time has progressed, he's felt more comfortable.
"It's been really exciting. I've finally settled in. It's become playing hockey against really good players instead of when you first get up here you can't really believe it. You're finally in the NHL and you get your chance," he said.
"I've been able to be more comfortable and able to go out and play hockey."
