NEW YORK, NY - With the conclusion of the 2022-23 NHL regular season on Friday night, Oilers captain Connor McDavid officially captured some long-expected hardware by winning the Art Ross Trophy as the League's scoring leader and the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL's top goalscorer.
The 26-year-old is coming off an unbelievable 153-point season of 64 goals and 89 assists -- 25 more than the next-closest player in teammate Leon Draisaitl (52G, 76A) and the most by any NHL player since 1995-96 when Mario Lemieux recorded 161 points with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was the League's outright leader in goals, assists and points this season, marking the fifth time in NHL history that one player has led in all major offensive categories after Wayne Gretzky last accomplished the feat with the Oilers in 1986-87.
His 25-point lead gap over Draisaitl was the largest between first and second in the NHL's scoring race since 1990-91, while his 64 goals to claim the Rocket Richard Trophy were three clear of the next closest player in Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak and the most by any player since Alex Ovechkin scored 65 goals in 2007-08 with the Washington Capitals.
