Bio

Pierre Turgeon

Turgeon pitched for Canada at the Little League World Series in 1982 and five years later, the Buffalo Sabres made the high-scoring center the No. 1 pick in the 1987 NHL Draft following his 154-point season (69 goals, 85 assists) with Granby of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

His time in Buffalo included finishing with 106 points (40 goals, 66 assists) in 1989-90, his third NHL season. But Turgeon blossomed after being traded to the New York Islanders on Oct. 25, 1991. He had his best NHL season in 1992-93, finishing with 132 points (58 goals, 74 assists) to help New York qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct.

Turgeon finished with 94 points (38 goals, 56 assists) in 69 games in 1993-94, helping the Islanders make the playoffs again. But the Islanders were in rebuilding mode in 1994-95 and traded him to the Montreal Canadiens on April 5, 1995. The Canadiens named Turgeon captain for the 1995-96 season, and he responded by finishing with 96 points (38 goals, 58 assists), earning his fourth and final trip to the NHL All-Star Game.

Although Turgeon had 11 points (one goal, 10 assists) in his first nine games in 1996-97, the Canadiens traded him to the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 29, 1996. Despite missing 67 games because of injuries in a three-year span from 1997-2000, he averaged more than a point a game in five seasons with the Blues (355 points in 327 games) and reached the 1,000-point mark with a goal against the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 9, 1999.

Turgeon became a free agent after the 2000-01 season when he finished with 30 goals and 82 points for the Blues and signed a five-year contract with the Dallas Stars. His contract was bought out prior to the 2005-06 season and he signed with the Colorado Avalanche and scored his 500th NHL goal against the San Jose Sharks on Nov. 8, 2005.

After two seasons with Colorado, Turgeon retired on Sept. 5, 2007. His 1,327 points (515 goals, 812 assists) in 1,294 games are the most of any eligible player not in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Turgeon had 97 points (35 goals, 62 assists) in 109 playoff games. His son, Dominic Turgeon, played briefly in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings.
