Bio

Dale Weise

Weise epitomizes the term "role player." He can fill just about any forward spot on any team he plays for and has done so over the course of his career. He has speed, size, grit and a knack for scoring in the clutch, but has most often been a checking-line player.

Weise was selected by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (No. 111) in the 2008 NHL Draft after playing three seasons for Swift Current of the Western Hockey League, but only appeared in 10 games for the Rangers, all during the 2010-11 season (he made his NHL debut Dec. 18, 2010, against the Philadelphia Flyers).

The Vancouver Canucks claimed him off waivers from the Rangers on Oct. 4, 2011. Weise scored his first NHL goal in his seventh game with the Canucks, on Oct. 20, 2011, against the Nashville Predators. He finished the season with four goals and eight points in 68 games.

During the NHL lockout in 2012-13, Weise played 19 games for Tilburg in the Netherlands' top league. He had 22 goals and 48 points, becoming known there as "Dutch Gretzky." Weise had three goals and six points in 40 games with the Canucks that season.

On Feb. 3, 2014, Vancouver traded Weise to the Montreal Canadiens for Raphael Diaz. Weise spent parts of three seasons in Montreal, where he scored 10 goals in a season for the first time (2014-15). He also scored five Stanley Cup Playoff goals with the Canadiens, including two in overtime: against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of the first round on April 16, 2014, and against the Ottawa Senators in Game 3 of the first round on April 19, 2015.

The Canadiens traded Weise and Tomas Fleischmann to the Chicago Blackhawks for Phillip Danault and a second-round draft pick in 2018 on Feb. 26, 2016. Weise scored one playoff goal for Chicago that spring, then signed a four-year contract with the Flyers as a free agent on July 1, 2016.

He had 34 points (17 goals, 17 assists) in 152 games in three seasons with the Flyers. On Feb. 9, 2019, Weise returned to the Canadiens when he and defenseman Christian Folin were traded to Montreal defenseman David Schlemko and forward Byron Froese.
