Bio

Mattias Samuelsson

Samuelsson signed a seven-year contract with the Sabres on Oct. 12, 2022, when he could have become a restricted free agent after the season. He averaged 20 minutes of ice time per game in 2021-12, fourth on the Sabres behind defensemen Rasmus Dahlin (24:01), Owen Power (22:05) and Henri Jokiharju (21:53).

Samuelsson played two seasons at Western Michigan (2018-20), joining the Broncos after three seasons at the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and helping the United States win silver at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship. He was chosen by the Sabres in the second round (No. 32) in the 2018 NHL Draft, signed a three-year contract March 25, 2020 and made his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 18, 2021. He had two hits in 14:12 of ice time to help Buffalo to a 4-2 win at KeyBank Center.

Samuelsson's father, Kjell Samuelsson, played 14 NHL seasons as a defenseman and was part of the Penguins' 1992 Stanley Cup championship team.

"When I was little, he taught me everything I knew," Mattias said during Sabres development camp in June of 2018.
