Bio

Filip Gustavsson

Gustavsson put his name in the NHL history books when he became the 15th goalie to have been credited with a goal by scoring into an empty net for the Minnesota Wild in a 4-1 win against the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center on Oct. 15, 2024.

He put together an excellent first season for the Wild, who acquired him in a trade with the Ottawa Senators for Cam Talbot on July 12, 2022. He went 22-9-7 with a 2.10 goals-against average, .931 save percentage and three shutouts in 39 games (37 starts). His GAA and save percentage were second in the NHL among goalies who played at least 25 games, behind Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins (1.89 GAA, .938 save percentage).

Making his first start in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Gustavsson made 51 saves, 12 in the third period and a combined 26 through two overtimes, to spark Minnesota to a 3-2 win against the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of the 2023 Western Conference First Round. It was the most saves by a Wild goalie in NHL playoff history, passing Niklas Backstrom (44) in a 4-3 overtime win against the Colorado Avalanche in Game 3 of the 2008 Western Conference Quarterfinals.

Gustavsson was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round (No. 55) of the 2016 NHL Draft. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract June 16, 2017, and continued his development on loan with Lulea HF in the Swedish Hockey League, the top professional league in Sweden, for the 2017-18 season.

One month after Gustavsson was traded to the Senators on Feb. 23, 2018, he was assigned to Belleville of the American Hockey League at the end of the SHL season. He played for Sodertalje SK of HockeyAllsvenskan in Sweden on loan with the 2020-21 season delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and made his NHL debut in relief of an injured Joey Daccord on March 17, 2021, making eight saves in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Vancouver Canucks.
