DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings erased a two-goal deficit in the third period Tuesday night but endured a stinging 5-4 overtime loss to the Seattle Kraken at Little Caesars Arena.

The setback ended a five-game winning streak for the Red Wings (5-1-1; 11 points), who extended their point streak to six consecutive games. Detroit goalie Ville Husso made 33 saves against the Kraken (2-4-1; 5 points).

“I think we’re disappointed with losing like that,” said Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin, who pushed his point streak to seven straight games with a power-play goal and two assists. “Great to come back from (being) down, 3-1, but had two points there in our hand and let it slip.”

Detroit nearly took the lead a minute into the first period, with Joe Veleno trying to finish a rebound on an open net but his attempt hit the crossbar. The Red Wings had another Grade-A look at 6:25 when Larkin raced in for a breakaway, but Seattle netminder Joey Daccord turned the shot aside to keep the game scoreless.

Veleno opened the scoring for Detroit at 1:07 of the second period, redirecting a point shot from Olli Maatta. Daniel Sprong, who played 82 games for the Kraken from 2021-23, assisted on Veleno’s fourth goal of the season.

The Kraken then scored three unanswered goals, entering the second intermission with a 3-1 lead.

“We obviously had a stretch of four or five minutes where it went against us,” Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde said. “A little adversity (in the second period). I just thought it was a really good challenge for us. I felt if we got one (goal), we’d get two. And that’s what happened.”

Shayne Gostisbehere cut it to 3-2 on the power play at 2:10 of the third period, one-timing a pass from Moritz Seider in the right face-off circle.

Larkin added a power-play goal at 4:38, beating Daccord with a quick shot up close to tie things up, 3-3. Detroit's captain was assisted by Seider and Gostisbehere.

Alex DeBrincat got the Red Wings ahead, 4-3, at 10:26 when he scored his NHL-leading ninth goal of the season on another power play. Larkin and Gostisbehere each recorded an assist.

It was the first time Detroit scored three man-advantage goals in a single frame since doing so in the second period on March 29, 2016, at the Montreal Canadiens.

“Anytime it goes out, it feels like it gives us a chance,” Lalonde said about the Red Wings’ power play this season. “Even early on, we had some good movement and touches. Momentum got us rolling.”

After scoring a power-play goal at 18:38 to force overtime, the Kraken netted the game winner with five seconds remaining in the extra frame.

“When you are down, 3-1, going into the third period and you get a point out of it, you are going to take that,” Lalonde said. “It would have been great to finish it off, but we did a good job of getting back into the game."

NEXT UP: Detroit will host the Winnipeg Jets for Star Wars Night at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday.

Lalonde on his assessment of Husso’s night

“It’s tough. There was a lot of volume. Obviously there’s a couple goals he definitely wants back.”

Larkin on Tuesday’s loss

“We took two penalties there with four minutes left and they capitalized. Then they get one in overtime. We get a point, but we feel we should have had two.”

Larkin on the late stages of overtime

“We won the face-off, then I had the puck on the half boards trying to play it back to Ghost and (Matty) Beniers knocks it out of the air. You got to make safe plays…We kind of gave it away.”
