Tim Stützle scored with two seconds remaining in overtime, and the Ottawa Senators recovered after blowing a four-goal lead to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 at Avicii Arena in Stockholm on Thursday in the first game of the 2023 NHL Global Series Sweden presented by Fastenal.

Stutzle, who also had two assists, swatted a centering pass from Drake Batherson out of the air and into the net after the pass deflected off the stick of Detroit defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere.

"I never really played [baseball] growing up," Stutzle said. "I think it was pretty lucky, I knew we didn't have a lot of time there left and I just tried to get it on the net. It was a great play there by Drake to get it to me."

Brady Tkachuk scored twice, and Josh Norris and Jake Sanderson each had a goal and an assist for the Senators (7-7-0), who have won two in a row. Joonas Korpisalo made 37 saves.

"It definitely feels good," said Tkachuk, the Ottawa captain. "Of course, there's things we need to clean up but I think it showed a little maturity there in the third period because of course the second didn't go our way so just simplify, play the right way and I wouldn't say just get it to overtime but just play the right way and do it one shift at a time. I was proud of the maturity that we showed there in the third and of course it was an unreal play to finish it off."

Gostisbehere had a goal and two assists, and James Reimer made 29 saves for the Red Wings (8-5-3), who have lost three of their past four games (1-1-2).

"Obviously when you're down four goals and you get a point, we'll take the point," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. "It just feels like how well we were playing 5-on-5, we could have got more tonight."

The Red Wings scored four times in less than eight minutes in the second period to tie the game after trailing 4-0.

Lucas Raymond, a native of Gothenburg, Sweden, cut it to 4-1 at 9:39 when he carried the puck on a 2-on-1 with Alex DeBrincat and shot from the left circle.

"It's special scoring at home but it would have been a lot better with a win here tonight," Raymond said. "The point (we earned) is obviously huge especially in this league. It stings coming back from 4-0. We're feeling really good but we spent a lot of time in the penalty box which hurt us a lot."

David Perron made it 4-2 at 13:20 when a point shot from Olli Maatta hit him in the hand before ricocheting over Korpisalo.

DeBrincat cut it to 4-3 at 16:33 when he took a cross-ice pass from Gostisbehere and shot from the left circle.

Gostisbehere tied it 4-4 at 17:12 when his shot from the right face-off dot deflected off Batherson's stick in the slot.

The Senators failed to break the tie when they had a 5-on-3 power play that began at 2:02 of the third period until Jakob Chychrun took a holding the stick penalty with 32 seconds remaining. The Red Wings killed off the remaining time while short-handed at 4-on-3.

Tkachuk put the Senators up 1-0 at 5:57 of the first period on the power play when he deflected Batherson's shot at the left hash marks.

Tkachuk scored again four minutes later to make it 2-0 at 9:57 taking a backhand pass from a sliding Stutzle, tapping the puck past Reimer.

"[Tkachuk] goes to the net there, stops at the net and not a lot of guys do that," Stutzle said. "I kind of saw him going low there and tried to get it as much as I can, as hard as I can."

The Red Wings thought they had cut the lead to 2-1 at 12:45 of the first period, but the goal was disallowed after it was determined that the referee blew the whistle to stop play before Perron's shot crossed the goal line.

Sanderson made it 3-0 at 13:09 of the second when he one-timed a pass from Vladimir Tarasenko at the left hash marks with the teams skating 4-on-4.

"We thought we gave them too much in the first period," Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said. "We took a retaliatory penalty and then we missed two assignments on the 4-on-4 and the Tkachuk second goal. That was a tough start, a tough three plays after we had a good start."

Norris made it 4-0 at 1:18 of the second when he took a pass from Mathieu Joseph on a give-and-go and shot from the right dot.

"I thought we come out, looked maybe a little nervous in the first period," Senators coach D.J. Smith said. "I thought we scored easy, we put it in the net but I don't think it was indicative maybe of the play, and that kind of lulled us to sleep. We didn't forecheck in the second period, we looked like we just wanted to hang on to it and kill the clock and clearly we got burned, but I'm proud of the guys, between periods, to regroup, come back out and stick with it."
