20230629 - BTN - NHL Draft - Day 2 - EN

MONTREAL - Following the completion of the second day of the 2023 NHL Draft, a whole slew of new names has been added to the Canadiens' prospect pool, with the hopes of one day achieving their dream of playing in the NHL.

Here's a look at the Habs' new crop of players from rounds 2-7 by the numbers:

3 - Of the eight picks owned by the Canadiens in rounds two to seven, Montreal added three goaltenders starting with Jacob Fowler (69th overall) from the Youngstown Phantoms in the USHL, Quentin Miller (128th overall) from the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL, and Yevgeni Volokhin (144th overall) from Khanty-Mansiysk Jr.

2 - The Canadiens doubled the number members of the Xhekaj family in the organization, after selecting Arber's brother Florian in the fourth round (101st overall). The younger Xhekaj, a left winger, is coming off his first year in the OHL with his hometown Hamilton Bulldogs, where he put up 25 points (12G, 13A) and 76 penalty minutes in 68 games. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder added three points (1G, 2A) and 18 penalty minutes in six playoff contests this spring.

50% - In terms of geography, Montreal split things right in the middle between North American and European players, with 50% of the team's picks coming from each side of the ocean on Thursday. The Habs picked two Canadians and two Americans, including local netminder Quentin Miller. A Montreal native, Miller served as backup for the 2023 champion Quebec Remparts in his rookie season in the QMJHL. He posted a 14-4-0 record, 2.11 goals-against average, .911 save percentage, and two shutouts in 20 games.

20 - The Canadiens did not hesitate to draft older players, such as defensemen Bogdan Konyushkov in the fourth round (110th overall) and Luke Mittelstadt in the seventh round (197th overall). The latter won a bronze medal at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2023, registering three assists in seven games. Mittelstadt - whose older brother, Casey, plays for the Buffalo Sabres - also collected 21 points in 28 games with the University of Minnesota this season.

2 - Two players from the Habs' 2023 Draft class were members of championship teams this past season, and they're both goaltenders. Fowler, who led the USHL with a 2.28 goals-against average in the regular season, helped the Youngstown Phantoms to a Clark Cup with an 8-1 record, 1.36 goals-against average, .952 save percentage, and one shutout in the playoffs. Miller was on the roster for the Remparts' President Cup win, but he didn't see any postseason action. Mittelstadt's University of Minnesota was the runner-up in the Men's Big Ten hockey championship.
