My Man: Emma Fortin on Brendan Gallagher

MONTREAL - She said, "Yes!"

Typically, when Brendan Gallagher isn't on his two feet, it's because he's causing havoc in the opposing team's crease. But, on July 7, the Canadiens forward fell to one knee for a very different reason when he proposed to his then girlfriend and now fiancée, Emma Fortin.

Whistler, British Columbia, a town renowned for its mountains, was the scene of the proposal and, metaphorically speaking, it's safe to say the newly engaged couple reached the peak.

Earlier this year, the canadiens.com staff caught up with Fortin to learn more about the Canadiens No. 11 and, believe it or not, Gally's not nearly as competitive as his better half.

How is he at home? Is he more of a teddy bear or is he independent?

He's a big teddy bear.

When he was drafted by the Canadiens, cooking wasn't his forte. Has he gotten better and does he cook for you?

Yes. Every Tuesday, he makes me his "Brendan Special" because I finish school late. It's a flank steak with a caesar salad, fries and asparagus. Every Tuesday, he makes the same meal.

Of everything he cooks for you, is that your favorite meal?

It's his favorite meal. [laughs]

Does he cook anything else?

He barbecues. Otherwise, he normally orders in for breakfast.

What are your favorite restaurants to eat at?

We often go to Béatrice and Grinder.

What are Brendan's best qualities?

I'd say his generosity, ability to listen, empathy and emotional intelligence.

What does he do that annoys you?

He complains… But he does it more as a joke, so it doesn't count.

The Bengals are his favorite football team. Does he watch them play every Sunday?

Yeah, but it's okay because he massages my feet at the same time while I do homework beside him. [laughs]

So, he takes care of you?

Yes, 100%!

What activities do you enjoy doing together?

We do everything; whether it's going for walks, going out for breakfast or dinner… We're always together.

What was he like on your first date?

To start, I'd say he was shy. Then, he let down his guard and we haven't skipped a beat ever since.

What was the first gift he bought you?

A small, little bracelet.

Is that your favorite gift he's bought you so far?

No, it's this one. [Points to another bracelet]

You bought a dog together last summer. Between the two of you, who's the dog's favorite and who's the most strict with him?

Me, he follows me everywhere but Brendan takes care of him a lot. I'm more strict; [Brendan] just pretends to be strict. [laughs]

Who's more competitive between the two of you?

When we're together, I'd say I'm more competitive. It's as if he can't reach my level of competitiveness, so he's more calm.
