Detroit had 43 shots against Nashville on Oct. 21.
1. Scoring first: The Wings' trouble scoring has been well-documented this season. Another issue is not getting the game's first goal. After Evander Kane scored at 7:12 of the first period, it marked the 10th straight game in which the Wings' opponent had scored first. The Wings fell to 9-11-1 when their opponent scored first. The Sabres improved to 9-1-5 when scoring first.
Quotable: "In the end, we just got to find ways to stop more pucks, whoever's in net. We can't give up four goals and expect to win lots of games in this league. That's not all on Petr (Mrazek), that's on our whole team. As a hockey team, we got to make sure we do a better job of defending. I know we talk lots about scoring here, but I've said it for two weeks, you can talk about scoring but you better be careful if you start giving up goals. You're in trouble and we can't give up four goals and expect to win." - Wings coach Jeff Blashill
2. Drew Miller: For the second straight game, Miller scored a goal to pull the Wings within a goal, both times cutting the deficit to 3-2. Against the Florida Panthers, Miller scored at 1:36 of the third. Against the Sabres, Dylan Larkin took a shot from the point and the puck hit Miller's skate and stopped. Miller deposited the rebound past goaltender Robin Lehner at 16:14 of the second. It is Miller's fourth goal of the season in just 24 games.
Quotable: "I saw Larkin going around the top and I saw him get to the middle of the ice and shoot. I knew it was coming somewhere and I just found the rebound. Just go to the net." - Miller
3. Henrik Zetterberg: It was somehow fitting that Brendan Shanahan was in the house to see Zetterberg bank the puck off Lehner and into the net at 14:46 of the second period for Detroit's first goal and Zetterberg's seventh of the season. Shanahan, in town to celebrate the 1997 championship team, scored quite a few goals like that during his career. At the time, it cut the Wings' deficit to 2-1 but the Sabres came back and scored 23 seconds later on Jack Eichel's sixth goal of the season.
Quotable: "I thought we came out hard, even though we were down two goals in the first, I thought it was a pretty good first from us. We worked ourselves back in the game. Their third one was a tough one after we scored our first, but we still found a way to get back and tie it up again and the fourth one was obviously a dagger." - Zetterberg
